Topic: OT: Kafe "fun"? (3 msgs / 248 lines)
1) From: miKe mcKoffee
Been asked a number of times if it's "fun" owning a café. No, 12 to 16 =
hour
days 7 days a week since October haven't necessarily been "fun".
Wrong question. Is it worth it? Why yes. Beyond not answering to =
Corporate
America it's the intangible rewards. Saturday and today I was giving the
option of pulling Kona Mountain Estate instead of my Ohana blend at not
extra charge. (Normally would be a buck more per shot.) I only offered =
this
on non fu-fu drinks BTW. Saturday one customer ordered a cappuccino and =
one
of my new pineapple mango macadamia nut scones with a why yes, I'd love =
to
try a Kona cappuccino. Later after finishing his cap' and scone he came =
up
to the counter and said I've just got to try that as a straight shot! =
Which
he paid for with a huge smile on his face. Later Saturday a customer =
ordered
a straight shot, of course offered him Kona Mountain. After he smelled =
and
quaffed the shot his eyes kind of glazed over. I asked how the shot was, =
his
reply "I'm speechless". (and went home with an LB whole bean KM:-) Today =
a
middle aged woman asked for a "cup of coffee" with room for cream. I =
offered
her a Kona Mountain cappuccino same price. Later she said it was the =
best
cup of coffee she's had in her life. (I did warn her when bringing the =
cap'
to her table this cup might cause her problems, might be addicting:-) =
And
many other similar comments the past weeks about various cups make it =
worth
it.
Food quality wise too. Same thing. Don't compete on price, compete on
freshness, taste and quality. Funny one Saturday just before closing. =
Was
chatting with a woman about the various scones I've developed and the =
method
of freezing them dough form individually for 20 minutes away from fresh
baked scone anytime. She asked if I sold them dough form! Never thought =
of
that. She took a frozen dough apricot peach walnut scone home to bake =
for
her Sunday morning:-)
And late this afternoon after letting my only employee I had come in go =
home
early got hit with a half dozen late lunch orders. One women commented =
the
roma tomato, fresh basil, fresh mozzeralla cheese, spicy mixed clover &
radish sprouts with our herb mayo and dash of red wine vinegarette on =
fresh
baked daily multi-grain bread was one of the best sandwiches she's ever =
had.
Made having to re-sanitize the sandwich fridge station Christmas Eve =
instead
of being home worth it.
Typed while drinking an Esmerelda Gesha Americano before firing up the =
TEK
to grill some steaks for dinner. After dinner will give Aida's Grand =
Reserve
a first taste:-)

oh, how I wish I were on the North Left Coast right now!
(instead of having to vacuum up the mess of gravel, litter and potting =
soil my 6-month-old kitten Happy made by knocking over the 2-foot
"treelet" once again--turns out he now LIKES "Bitter Yuck" spray!).
Happy Boxing Day--would trade places right now in a heartbeat!
