Topic: another new convert (5 msgs / 143 lines)
1) From: Kris Bhatti
We had a dinner guest at my house this evening. After dinner, my husband asked her if she would like some coffee. She said she'd made a New Year's resolution to give up coffee, but my husband started playing up how good the coffee is, that I roast it myself, etc. She quickly caved in and said she'd make this one exception. As I ground the beans and pulled the first shots, she started commenting on the amazing smell, how much better it was already than anything she'd had at Starbucks (she didn't even have the cup in front of her yet.) When I served her a nice latte, she started in on what a work of art it was (it wouldn't make it into the latte art hall of fame, but did look pretty darned good). It was really interesting to hear very specific criticism of the coffee she was used to having, completely unprompted, by someone who had never tasted good fresh well-roasted coffee. My friends all know about my coffee hobby and might humor me, but this
person had no idea about this whole obsession. By the time she was halfway through the cup, I'd described the basic process of roasting and shown her my bean stash and let her smell the greens. When she left a bit later, she went with the Sweet Maria's URL and plans to place an order for some roasted beans tonight. So much for that New Year's resolution...

She said she'd made a New Year's resolution to give up "coffee..." -or, as
it's pronounced in places of execrable issue, "Product," normal, large,
super size or, as I termed my junior mop bucket sized 7-11 mug,
Brobdingnagian. It held most of a fresh pot I brewed at 7-11, 120cc of crea=
m
and 2oz of honey. Naturally, I used two of their packs of coffee grounds fo=
r
my pot!
Kris, in my humble opinion, your friend has spontaneously concluded that
over roasting and extended storage of innocent coffee beans resulted in the
derelict beverage normally served at Four Bucks. The spontaneity of her
decision to abandon the dreckig Scheiße (ADS) should easily place her as =
a
finalist for 100 CSA points award.
Now that your friend knows there is a whole frontier of flavor beyond the
attainment of commercial interest, she is smart enough to know that the
roast and freshness will be missing unless she roasts her own. Roasting is =
a
joy in itself.

I try not to overwhelm people right away - the first step is simply realiza=
tion that there is something better out there than what they had always hea=
rd was so wonderful (it's on every corner, so it must be great, right?) I =
figured pointing her to Sweet Maria's and suggesting that she order some of=
Tom's roasted coffee would be the gateway to all things good. I encourage=
d her to read the articles available on the site, so I think she's started =
down the right path.
I just finished roasting a pound of IMV and a p=
ound of Moka Kadir (not together!) in the bread machine and I can't keep my=
hands away from my face - that long lasting smell on the hands from using =
the heatgun is another whole part of the enjoyment for me. Do those of you=
who roast with other methods get any similar sensory bonus?
