Topic: Goo Goo Muck vs Sumatra Gayo Mountain (2 msgs / 72 lines)
1) From: Brandon Kolbe
Hello All,
This is not going to sound like a very professional comparison but so
far this is the best I can do. I was having a rather bad allergy day which
was affecting my smelling/flavor detector. Anyway, I received these two
coffees ( as well as several others ) on Thursday of last week. I finally
roasted some of the Goo Goo Muck and Sumatra on Sunday. I wanted to compare
these side by side. First I did a, very amateur, cupping. The dry aroma of
the GGM seemed to have this cardboard smell to it as well as some other
"off" flavors that I could not place. The Gayo Mountain definitely smelled
smoother and sweeter.
After adding the water the GGM was definitely more bitter and had a
rather "cheap" flavor. Again, I was having troubles picking out flavors but
something just didn't taste quite right. The Gayo Mountain was definitely
smoother and had a better flavor. Later in the day I actually brewed some
of each in my Swiss Gold one cup brewer. Again the GGM was definitely more
bitter and had some off flavors.
I am going to allow the remainder of these two coffees to rest another
day or so and try them again. Perhaps the flavor will develop a bit more
and my allergies won't be bothering me quite as bad. Then I will be able to
give a better description of what I taste. Either way I ended up dumping
the GGM that I brewed in my one cupper. It was just plain, old gross. I
definitely raise a toast to our hosts, Tom & Maria, for bringing us such
wonderful beans. Without them I don't know what we would be roasting.
Happy Roasting,
Brandon

Brandon,

Just for fun, you might want to do the next cupping blind, so you don't kno=
w which cup is which when you test it. See how your results match up. :)
