Oops... as evidence to support my newbie status, I just found out that =
my first post bounced. To wit:

Subject: Coffee Heretic in SC
This is my first post.
Ever.
Anywhere.
Until I subscribed to the Homeroast Digest list last week, I had never =
seen the benefit in joining any of the millions of lists available now =
on every topic imaginable. From the start of Ken's Behmor vs. Gene =
Café debate however, I've been hooked. With the possible exception of =
the SM website, I have never before witnessed such a beautiful =
concentration of helpful advice. To get my feet wet, please indulge me =
while I introduce myself to you by way of some of the topics I've seen =
recently:
Like Brian in Columbia, I am also in South Carolina, only about an =
hour north of Brian in the piedmont. I completely agree with his =
assessment of the miserable climate down there, as my wife and I =
graduated from college in Columbia. Back then we called it "the armpit =
of the universe." Sorry, Brian, but I bet you understand, like anyone =
down there, that Fort Jackson is in Columbia for a reason.
I was pleased to see a couple Iowans on today's digest, one from Cedar =
Rapids and another in Bettendorf. Coincidentally, some of my beans =
have recently been shipped to North Liberty and Muscatine, which are =
creepily close to each. My daughter was born in West Union.
I began roasting this past August in the West Bend Hot Poppery II my =
mother-in-law gave us as a wedding gift decades ago. I read an article =
about home roasting in the Utne Reader, and I have been hooked on the =
hobby since my first 33 gram batch.
Since then I have also dabbled with a Fresh Roast, and just yesterday =
I placed an order with SM to get a Behmor. I'm guessing it will arrive =
in a week or so.
I have purchased green beans from a number of vendors since August, =
both local and online. The most important words I think I can share =
with you are these:
Sweet Maria's is the secret to a great cup. Period.
I have been amazed by how similarly mediocre every roast of the =
various beans from all over the world taste when compared to the =
fireworks that go off in my mouth from anything I have received from =
SM. From Maragogipe to Peaberry, from the local [over] roaster to eBay =
vendors, the only beans that truly benefit from the control home =
roasters have come from SM.
So why the "coffee heretic" in the subject? Because I am a beer =
drinker. I only drink about a quarter to a half cup of coffee from =
each roast. I started this hobby because my wife, Donna, is a very =
finicky coffee drinker, and I thought spending some time outside with =
my kids and a popcorn popper might be a fun way to tickle her palate. =
I never dreamed I would have so much fun with this. The variations in =
the process seem infinite. At the same time, good results are a snap. =
I have about a dozen "tasters" out there (two of whom are in IA) who =
regularly sample a couple ounces of my roast at a time, and are =
delightfully candid with their feedback. I am eager to see what the =
Behmor is going to do for this special hobby of mine, and I am =
thrilled that there is a font of knowledge like what is available to =
me through this list.
Thank you for indulging this newbie. I promise my subsequent posts =
will be as short and efficient as what I've seen you create, and I =
feel honored to know your language.

Welcome Brian, from the other Cedar Rapidian on the list.
North Liberty! Wow - that's close too... Ever get up this way?
Glad you joined up,

Brian, welcome to the list!! That's really funny that you only drink a
little bit of your product. I roast for myself, roast what I like, and then
share sometimes... but also love beer! So welcome to the list, hope you
like it here!bill
ps this is the only list i've belong to, that i've ever belonged to...

Bill,
Greetings to all from the S. Jersey shore!
Hmmm...Another man who loves his beverages, coffee & bier, possibly a new
thread?
You wouldn't possibly be a bit obsessed with bbq as well would you?
I've been reading posts on themeyers.org for a while, just subscribed to
"the list".
Steve

6) From: Bill
no, not obsessed with BBQ... if you've been seeing that in my posts, it's
cause i use the bbq in the winter as an additional heat source for the HG...
while i can use the bbq, i'm not a master cooker by any stretch...
and welcome to the list! hope it's good for ya!

I love beer too, but I am worried that if I bring a thermos of beer

Hi Brian,
Welcome to coffee heaven/hell... it's all a matter of perspective. Anyway, I
see you also enjoy a good brew. There is a very interesting site that you
may or many not be familiar with w/respect to beer. While this site isn't
really involved with the production of beer, it certainly helps with the
consumption of it. I give you the beer map project,http://beermapping.com/I keep wondering if it would be possible to repeat this for coffee.
