Topic: Does UPS ever deliver anything early???? (19 msgs / 397 lines)
1) From: Ken Knott
So my Gene Cafe is scheduled to arrive tommorow.. that's a full 8 days afte=
r I ordered it.
The tracking info is exasperating... It says it boarded a truck in San Pab=
lo, CA on Friday... Then nothing... =
Has it cross Kansas? Is it over the Mississippi? Any stops in Las Vegas? =
Most times I look at tracking info, I see all the little stops at the routi=
ng centers along the way. This time its' as it they're shipping it in a tr=
uck direct from San Pablo, CA direct to my lab in Blacksburg, Va.... =
But, could it show up early??? Today????

Hey Ken,

I live in Chesapeake, VA and when my beans are sent via UPS they do just
what you describe. They disappear in CA and don't show up again until they
actually reach the east coast a week later. They have always been on time though
unless UPS specified "delivery rescheduled".
Oh to live close to Oakland!

In my neck of the woods FedEx will deliver early, often by a day or two. UPS
will not. My UPS delivering friend makes several passes by the same place.
Once in the morning to pick stuff up, and deliver the overnight stuff, then
later in the day to deliver the "UPS Ground".

UPS from the PRCa to the middle of the country is a direct shot. The
Gene Cafe is in a truck and there will be no update until the trailer is
unloaded. Also, Sunday, and most of the time Saturday does not count.
Nothing unusual here.

Thanks for the responses.

Let me quickly say that I'm not 'complaining' as to the delivery time, just wondering/hopeful that it might arrive early.

I'm just surprised that from California to Virginia there are no transfers that would 'update' the tracking info.

Thanks again,

Ken

Consider your package blessed. If it transfered trucks it would most
likely be at the Chicago hub. They have a machine there that crushes
every package that passes through....

My experience is almost never. I have watched them hold shipments in
Jackson Mississippi for four days before sending it on to Alabama so
they would not be as fast as their more expensive and quicker
deliveries. The only time I got a shipment one day early was when it
was delivered with another package that was scheduled to be delivered
the day before so they brought both at the same time.

La Place, which is no longer an official place and therefore
making it nowhere, Alabama.

Probably not. But my experiences with UPS are documented here on the
list so I'm not impartial. I've had two shipments from SM that were late
because of "late train departure". Not SM's fault. Shoved the arrival by
a couple of days (gnashing of teeth, grumbling, punching of walls,
mashing of metal ...).

UPS tracking usually shows an arrival scan the day before the scheduled
delivery.

I had a package that, according to the status, had arrived in Dalas,
then was out for delivery. Apparently drove around Dallas all day,
then later, it departed Dallas and showed up in Santa Barbara a day
late. It never did tell me what it thought of Dallas.

I find it strange that if you pay for 2 day shipping with UPS it will
get there in two days (most of the time). Even if it is nearby. If I'm
ordering something that will be shipped from Los Angeles (I'm in Santa
Barbara 90 miles up the coast) it will get here overnight if I choose
ground shipping. If you pay more for 2 day, it will be here in 2 days
rather than overnight. I've never seen UPS deliver early. FedEx does
it all the time. I often get things earlier than the scheduled
delivery from FedEx.

Better yet, you could live right IN Oakland. Takes me about 7 minutes to get
from my house to the warehouse. And sometimes they're having a roaster fire
when I get there.

Unlikely.
However, I have had packages that were sent with insanely high
declared values (costing extra insurance) show up much quicker than
scheduled. It was sent UPS ground, and insured for many thousand
bucks. It arrived in a couple of days. I guess UPS figures that the
longer it takes, the more the risk exposure, so they expedite it.
(In this case, the goal was not to ship the item faster - I truly did
not care how long it took)
So, was the roaster shipped insured?

Ken,
I have similar pangs of anxiety, as I am waiting for my Behmor to
arrive to the east coast from Oakland. I started reading this list
with your insightful debate between the Gene Cafe and the Behmor, and
I went with your initial instinct as I succumbed to consumer
temptation. This list is definitely an effective tool for developing
the homeroasting market and is a great complement to Tom's diligent
efforts at providing a singular source for the very best.
Blacksburg, eh? I spent many nights at Donaldson Brown (I was a
charter William E. Skelton Fellow) during the decade that my wife and
I lived in Galax. Beautiful country up there!
I am determined to zen out until my Behmor arrives, but it is not
easy. Delivery is scheduled for the 25th.
Thank you for the impetus,

I sit in my office, and rather than make a trip to the front porch, I =
log on and check. When it says "delivered" I go outside and get my package.

On the contrary, they appear to have gone out of their way on a couple of
occasions to avoid delivering early. On much-anticipated shipments, I watch
the tracking site as well. A couple of times, the item showed "out for
delivery" a couple of days early. Great! I'm looking forward to the
arrival. However at the end of the day it showed the package checked back
into the local depot. It's as if they didn't want to get customers'
expectations up! Can't deliver it too early you know... I suppose they
could have been trying to optimize their routes, but why even load it on the
truck only to take it back and process it again?
