While pre-roast blending seems easier and less time consuming and maybe even
more economical, post roast blending allows greater flexibility and greater
taste potentials IMO. It is virtually impossible to roast some beans
decently together yet if roasted separately work great together in a blend.
For instance it takes six separate roasts for our Ohana espresso blend.
While some of the different beans could be roasted rather well together even
a few degrees difference in a particular beans finish temp and how that temp
achieved can make a big difference in the final cup. And some of the beans
in the blend take a very different roast than any of the others. It's about
maximizing each beans potential for it's intended use. Some of the beans
used in Ohana are also offered as whole bean SO's for sale, usually a
different roast treatment than that used for Ohana. It's way more hassle and
work, but it takes what it takes.

Ah, and I realized too late that you're not using gmail... so I just hit
"reply" to the last message in the thread, even if I'm replying to something
else... Gmail doesn't display the previous messages below the one I posted,
so I never see it. So yeah, sorry for calling you names... that was
actually my bad. I definitely wouldn't have figured that you needed to read
an article on blending... that's actually laughable! Thanks for not being
offput by my mistake!bill

Bill,
Actually you be a thunkin' wrong. I'm always reading on blending, roasting,
brewing, storing, cupping etc. The day I stop being willing to learn more
about the infinitely complex bean that is coffee is the day I stop, dead.
Speaking of dead, a dear friend and family member of 17 years died while we
were eating dinner tonight. He's been my master since the first day he
joined our home as a wee furball of a kitten. I still remember staying up
with him that first night because he cried and missed his mother so much,
our bond was permanently forged. It was often funny, he'd often follow me
around like a puppy dog. We knew his time was nigh and decided to take him
into the vet and put to sleep after we ate. He's been slowly declining for a
couple years from his former 13# robust self down to under 7. Last couple of
days I knew his time was short. This evening when I got home he didn't even
lift his head when I petted him and he was barely breathing. But Misha
always hated going the the vet and especially getting shots so departed on
his own terms. I was glad for that. I will miss him sorely and never forget
him. It'll be a bit empty him not sleeping on the right side of my head even
though he'd often be annoying many a early morning batting me lightly in the
face as his purr rumbled 'cuz HE deciding it was time to be petted. Which of
course I'd dutifully do as commanded then pull the sheet over my head to
ward off further battings as I went back to sleep. Life goes on but I am sad
and mourn his passing.

I always went with the idea that the beans should roast separately, and
to the levels that each bean origin is best, and then blend. Seems
logical; but curious what others were doing.
I will read that article...
Thanks,
Jeff

I can't tell you how much your story moved me back to my memories of my
sweet black friend of 14 years. I buried him on a hill top on my property
with a beautiful view of the Columbia River gorge, his stomping ground for
many years.
Thank you for sharing Mike.

i have a 12 years old neutered male and a year old very talkative
female. it gets hard to sleep when one or the other tries to lay on my
belly. i now have a catheter coming out my abdominal wall. any weight
on or near it causes pain. i get to drain my belly once a day. instant
beer belly reduction. one to two liters of fluid.
i think i have very thing set for them when i die. but who knows.
people get funny about things like that. i guess i will find out how it
goes from the other side of life. ?????

My newest kitty is an 8-month-old orange tabby named Happy (who we
adopted at 9 weeks and had neutered at 4 months). He loves to play--
everything is a toy, even my earplugs! He also purrs at the drop of a
hat and lets me hold him cradled on his back like a baby. He eats like
a horse--10-12 oz. of wet food a day and free-feeding dry kibble, but
the vet said to let him eat as much as he wants because he is growing
like a weed and runs around burning off his food right after eating.
He is the size of an adult cat, but is still shaped like a kitten; and
he loves to come into the bed, drape himself across my neck and
throat, and lay his little purry-furry face on my nose and mouth so he
can feel me breathe as we both drift off to sleep (assuming I don't
suffocate)--and you can hear his purring halfway across town!
