I don't remember commenting on it, but the solenoid out of an ancient
contactor made a tremendous vibrator when I swapped out the armature piece
for a permanent magnet and linked it to an aluminum plate supported by three
A hole in the plate is lined with a section of slit auto parts store fuel
line, and the espresso maker's pf sets in the rubber lined hole.
As the plate vibrates in the X-Y plane, so does the porta-filter. At very
low amplitude, the vibration of the plate/ pf packs the coffee grounds by
itself. I have actually used the plastic disc "tamper" supplied with the
Capresso. It just keeps the surface of the grounds flat in the pf.
