Just finished the 14th back to back roast. After replacing the low flame
pilot with the high flame this puppy is performing flawlessly. Couple times
was even ready with the beans and profile beginning next roast right after
the beans dumped for cooling roasting and cooling simultaneously, way
cool:-) Will get more efficient as more profiles completely dialed in.
During the middle of some roasts working on another profile while the
current automated profile "doing it's thing." Way worth the bucks adding the
automation control if roasting commercially IMO. Able to do other things
like labels and bagging while roasting. I'm not an idiot and of course stay
in the area keeping a watchful eye. Pretty cool even if get engrossed in
something ~20f before EOR temp a god awful alarm goes off. Trust me, you
WILL respond to that alarm post haste!
Some people poo-poo using autmation touting it's takes the art out of
roasting. Bull. You gotta design and tweak and tweak some more each profile
for each bean each batch size. Now once done dialing in the profiles why
need to sit and baby sit every second of every roast hour after hour every
single roast session? Hello this is the 21st century!
Rant off: Now back to your regularly unscheduled postings.
And that batch of Sumatra is cooled so off the bagging...

Nothing wrong with repeating great art. The truth is you took the time to
develop your artisan craft, and now you are able to repeat it for so many
peoples' benefit!
Never apologize!

It was fun seeing the big brother to my roaster. I am not sure what Mike
and Bruce have named their USRC roaster yet, but I have named
mine,"Bueford." I had the opportunity to hear the alarm go off yesterday.
It wakes you up that is for sure! Mike's Ohana Blend is simply awesome!
Only Mike would come up with a 6 bean post roasted blended signature blend
for his espresso! Lots of work, but the taste is worth it. I enjoyed
spending some time with Mike and Bruce yesterday. They have a nice little
cafe and roaster shop going! It is fun to see a dream become a reality.
They are both working very hard. They are not too far off of I-5, so if you
are near Portland-Vancouver you ought to drop in. They have wonderful
sandwiches too!

I will be in Vancouver/Portland this coming August. We'll be visiting my
wife's brother and his family who live in Vancouver. Hopefully I can make
it by Mike's shop. I'm also hoping to visit Stumptown while we're there.

Whoa thar pahdna, I ain't apoligizin!
What got me on the rant was thinking about the 8 roasts Josh did recently
for Tom of the Sumatra and the time it would consume combined with various
sundry on going drivel on various sundry forums. 8 roasts averaging 17:30 so
likely 3 roasts an hour at best so almost 3 hours constant attention. Don't
get me wrong I love roasting but I suppose I bore easily. I mean 8 back to
back batches of the same bean same profile... Uh, I'll let the machine make
the adjustments along the course of the profile for me thank-you very much
rather than just repeating my hand movements on the dials the same way 8
roasts in a row!

Duane's Stumptown is a class act and definitely worth the visit. That said,
I'll go portafilter to portfilter with Ohana versus Hairbender any day or
night of the week! It takes mucho time to build this type of business
regardless the quality but have already picked up a few "former" Stumptown
regulars, both for pulls and whole beans. (Only know this because they've
told us.)
