Topic: Yirgacheffee from sampler? (11 msgs / 215 lines)
1) From: bv welch
I'm new to Sweetmaria's, and new to this list. I'm reposting this question
since it didn't seem to make it through. It has been several days...
I recently bought a sampler, and I've been unable to find any writeup on
this item from my sampler:
<Snip>
*Ethiopia Organic Yirgacheffee
At city+: Effervescent brightness, floral, citrusy kumquat fruit; honey
sweetness. slightly winey finish.
*
I'm not complaining, just wanting to learn more.
thanks!

Hi Bill - welcome to the group!
Not sure what you are asking - I know that this is one of my absolute
favorites. Been roasting for a bit now, and still can't pick up on the
subtle tastes. I drink something, and think, hmm - tastes like coffee.
But w/SM's - it's fantastic, off the scales coffee!

Bill,
You have one that is sold out so the review is in the
archive: Go to this page and scroll down to the Ethopians.

Bill,
Welcome to the wonderful world of coffee language and flavors. This
is a great adventure and Sweet Maria's folks are great guides to this
world.
My wife and I have been roasting coffee for quite a few years and
still do not taste all the flavors that people like Tom describe.
However, his guidance is always excellent and we have learned to read
the reviews to find coffees we like. The Yirgacheffee coffees are
amongst our favorites, but we don't find all the nuances that Tom
does.
Our only problem, thus far, is that there are more good coffees than
we have the time to taste and enjoy.

Bill:
The reviews that are easily accessible from the front page are current
coffee offerings, that is, you can buy them. As soon as SM sells out of a
coffee, they move the review from that page to the archives. (OK, not as
soon as, but pretty quickly. I tried to order a coffee that had just sold
out, and got an email from them informing me...). So anyway, it sometimes
happens that you will get a coffee and can't read the review on the "Green
bean offering page." So what you do is scroll down to the large bank of
links at the bottom and go to the "archives" for the specific letter (in
this case E). Then you scroll down til you hit the Yirgacheffe that your
coffee applies to. Hope that's clear! This happens from time to time, as I
said. Sometimes, I'll roast a coffee for a while, then want to re-read
Tom's review. Oftentimes I look into the archives.
Or you can go back to the archives from 2001 and see the changes...it's
kinda interesting and fun!
And just cuz I'm a nice guy today, here's the link for the archives you're
looking for:http://www.sweetmarias.com/coffee.reviewarchive.cos-f.htmlScroll down. The coffee you're gonna enjoy is the first in the ethiopian
list. Hope that helps!

Opps, my bad... didn't mean to steer you wrong on my post. I made the
assumption that it was just labeled differently.
Ethiopia FTO Yirga Cheffe Konga != Ethiopia Organic Yirgacheffee
even though
Ethiopia = Ethiopia
FTO (Free Trade Organic) ~= Organic
Yirga Cheffe = Yirgacheffee
:-(

It's dangerous making assumptions!

Thank you, Jim! I actually tried to find the archives, but somehow never
did see it. Live and learn! I'm glad there are no dumb questions here, at
least on slow days. :-)

Welcome to the list! Glad to have you on board. Tell us a little about
yourself. What part of the country do you live in? How long you've been
roasting, roasting equipment, brewing equipment, coffee preferences, etc.
You'll learn more about us very quickly as you read the list. It's kinda
like family...on caffine.

Gotta agree with Lynne, "hmm - tastes like coffee".
I keep noticing that flavor is not mentioned in the cupping notes.
