Topic: WAY OT: Melanoma Doctors (13 msgs / 244 lines)
1) From: Sean Cary
This is way off topic - but I am grasping for anything here. Just occurred
that I can try this as a source.
My dad has been fighting Melanoma for over a year - two surgeries and
radiation treatment at Duke and at a hospital in AZ. Two series of Chemo,
the 2nd of which was ended last week, the PI-88 he was on caused a rash to
break out in the region of the surgery that turned out to be external
melanoma.
They took him off the PI-88 and the Oncologist told my dad to get me out to
AZ immediately - which of course freaked us all out. (They are in Tucson)
So after taking a deep breath I spent the day on the phone looking for Stage
III and IV clinical trials my dad can get into here on the east coast,
primarily in the NC area so I can be closer to him...
So bottom line - do ANY of you know of Melanoma specialists that are between
here (Jacksonville NC) and Tucson that I can get my dad to to keep pressing
on this rather then roll over and let my dad just die as they have
prescribed?
I have exhausted all of the internet resources that I can find - the
National Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society - google, Cancer
Treatment Centers of America... I must have made 30 calls yesterday -
applying Marine rigor to getting my dad to treatment, driving him nuts in
the process since I keep calling with numbers/POC's for him to call...but I
am not quitting until I get something.
Anything is appreciated!
Sean

Sean:
I am very sorry to hear about your father. My dad died in 1959 of melanoma. There was nothing they used then since they had nothing. At that time they had not even used or had any information on the 5 stages. They used nitrogen mustard, great stuff to inject in the body, kills the bad stuff as well as all the good stuff!!
At stage 3 your father may be safe and his cancer arrested. There are no new treatments that I know of but I will check with my sister who keeps a sharp watch on what is going on with melanoma for the rest of us and all the kids.
Your father is in our prayers.
I will get back to you off list.
with love,
ginny
I will email her now and ask if she knows of anything

Sean,
Have you tried the NIH trials database? This database may be searched
by disease and/or trial location and will also provides names of
researchers even if they are not currently recruiting for a trial.http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct;jsessionid©20045DB4009D818DC97C59AEF1D76CSean Cary wrote:

I admire your courage and your deep love. I hope you are balancing your deep desire for your father's restored health with the reality of the impermanence of life. Of course you should look and research and know that you have done your best. But also leave room for your father to say when "enough is enough" without feeling like he's disappointing his son. That being said, I pray that your father and all of you find strength and comfor during this difficult part of life's journey.

They are in contact with MD in Texas and I found out from another poster
that there is one in Orlando...which is home for my wife.
Frustrating trying to make this happen quickly...and I have watched him
wasted 2-3 weeks or a month or two at a time. I was not able to do much
from Iraq.

Sean,
You might try UAB in Birmingham, Alabama. They have a Comprehensive Cancer
Clinic.
This web page has online information, and a toll free telephone number.http://www3.ccc.uab.edu/show.asp?durkiX269They mention clinical trials for Melanoma.

Sean,
I have friend, Bruce, who is a Doc, ex-military and a mover and shaker
in the Rural Health community. I forwarded a cut and paste of your
query to him and recieved the following:
<Snip>
A follow up phoncon with Bruce produced the thought that being from a
Naval family may give you a little weight with the National Cancer
Institute (NCI) in Bethesda. Even your average Navy Corpsman (and you
guys don't get the average ones) can usually give you a starting place
to work the phone and end up with the heavy weights at Bathesda Naval
Hospital who could get you to the right folks at NCI. Can't come up
with a better source of real info.
Bruce's and Our thoughts and best wishes to your Dad, You and your family.

i under stand, but i hate to say these things take time to find and
maybe time to get started.
the one i am starting i found out about was well over a month ago before
i was contacted and then maybe a month to get things set up.
so do not expect tings to go quickly, except maybe his health. i wish
him th every best of luck with this.

Thanks - just got off the phone with Mom...this is maddeningly slow. Full
stop on everything until Monday. I would be beating folks if I was getting
this delay, they seem to roll with it.
