Here along the lakefront it's 42 and overcast; it rained so much
overnight (and was so warm yesterday) that almost all the snow
melted-- nothing on the roads or sidewalks, very little (mostly melted
and refrozen ad nauseam) on grassy areas, and a watery hump of ice
down the center of the alleys (still there because they don't get
plowed). But they're talking a changeover to sleet and then snow, with
another 1-3 inches mainly south of the city into Indiana. It was 57
yesterday, but by Thursday night it'll be (sigh) 8 again. This is the
longest, snowiest, coldest winter Chicago has had since 1979 (when as
late as March 15 the mercury hit zero) and 1982 (when on Passover,
April 8, we had 8 inches of snow and a low of 16 degrees F). It gets
old pretty quickly, especially since my knees are too shot to X-C ski
anymore.
With the Behmor, though, I can roast indoors. Down to 2/3 lb. IMV,
1/2 lb. Aged Sumatra, about a pot's worth each of Sumatra Gayo Mt. and
Guatemala El Injerto COE, and a mini-pot or AP's worth of Yemen Mokha
Sana'ani roasted and ready to rock. Got more of the Aged and Classic
Sumatra Mandheling and IMV, plus some Kona Kowali and Aussie Mt. Top
(plus my sampler) in my stash. Exhausted my last roasted batch of
Greenline espresso; would throw together another lb. of my Rocket Fuel
blend except a friend gave me 1/2 lb. (uh-oh) Starbucks Espresso
Regalo as a belated birthday present, and I figured I'd better use it
before it gets any staler (pull date is July '08). Was going to use it
for my hubby's electric moka pot, but pulled a few shots of it over
the weekend and it's not bad at all--actually nearly choked my Silvia
(45-sec. ristretto!) and gave very little crema, but the flavor is
very rich and complex, sort of dark chocolaty and smoky, especially
harmonious in a heavy-cream breve. Had planned to turn it into an
Americano but good thing I tasted first--knocked it back straight and
was glad I did.
