Topic: More Caffe Rosto Notes (30 lines)
1) From: Jacobean
I found a couple of interesting operational things when switching from the
Poppery to the Rosto. When I first got the CR, everyone was out of the house
so I roasted at room temp under the stove exhaust hood. Before I knew it, at
7.5 minutes the beans had blown through to a Vienna roast! The manufacturer
guidelines indicate you shouldn't even be approaching City at that point.
Next batch I moved into the sub-freezing garage (everyone was back in the
house). I tried to warm the unit with a 4 minute run which didn't work because
I was attached to a 50' extension cord. When I plugged directly into the
outlet the unit warmed.
I kept a close eye on the roast given what happened inside. But, at 11 minutes
I had just reached City as opposed the 7.5 minute inside Vienna roast
previously.
Additionally, it's nearly impossible to hear the cracks in comparison to the
Poppery. However, with the clear see-through dome on the CR you can see the
color better than the tinted Poppery hood.
In short, it's best to roast inside or you must use a box outside. You should
plug directly into an outlet. Roast by eye, forget about being able to hear
the cracks.
