Topic: Near fire with GC... (7 msgs / 173 lines)
1) From: Ken Knott
So I just roasted some Ethiopia Organic Limu (Indonesian process). It was =
smoking quite mightily... I discovered why when I opened the roaster and f=
ound both chaff screens nearly clogged with chaff. And the one next to the=
heating element was stuffed with near ash colored chaff.
I clean the roaster regularly between roasts and I've never seen so much cl=
ogging the air flow. =
Is this just a very 'chaffy' bean??? Something to perhaps shy away from wi=
th the GC?
Thanks for any input,
Ken

How much did you roast. I did a half pound of this and while it had a =
lot of chaff, I experienced no unusual pyrotechnics... They tell you =
to do no more than 240 grams of high-chaff coffees.

I had about 240 grams of beans.... maybe I used too much for it being such=
 a high chaff bean...
Will that sort of thing influence the roast? =

4) From: Coffee
I would think that reduced airflow due to chaff clogging the vents =
would have to have an effect, but I have no idea how much. When I =
roasted it, I noticed nothing unusual... other than increased chaff.

Yes, very chaffy bean. Reduce to 230 grams next time.
In fact, until you discover which are heavy chaff producers, roast =
everything at 230 grams - measure accurately! - and make adjustments =
from there by increasing amounts according to your notes.
And keep an eye on the chaff sweeper!

Man, there's nothing more fun than a heavy chaff bean with my heat gun...
not saying anything about the GC, and I know this is a GC thread, but I'm
musing here. I'm standing there, heat gun blazing, stirring like crazy with
my spoon, and chaff is just flying EVERYWHERE!!! WOW! And it's on the back
of my neck, on top of my hat, hanging in the beard, everywhere! Man, it's
pretty wild. and that's with 570 grams!bill
