Topic: French Press Brew Time (5 msgs / 95 lines)
1) From: sci
Anybody willing to weigh in on the question about the length of time to
steep coffee in a French Press, my favorite brew method?
I grind coarse, but not the coarsest I have ever seen, just as coarse as my
grinder goes. I pour water at 205F and brew in a homemade insulated press
after preheating it. The water cools to 203F after 3 minutes. What do ya'll
think? Is three minutes too long? Does anybody recommend different lengths
of time for different roasts? I have made over 10K presses of coffee and
have played with lots of factors, but I have never read anything on it and
every soul I know brews by drip.

I have been playing a lot lately. I go fairly coarse, steep for 3 minutes.
If you're really coarse, what I would do is try it for 4 minutes, then for
5 minutes. You want the best cup to you.
I would assume that different cups would be better with different steeps. I
haven't messed with it that specifically.

I rest for 6 minutes at a coarse grind: pour on water, wait 1 minute, =
gentle stir, wait 5 minutes, plunge & pour.

I grind finer then drip and go three minutes (30 in my Rocky)...
Water boils and then I let it sit while I grind into the press.
Tossed the last two roasts into the garbage today - had a press pot of
Panama 1800 I roasted yesterday...still having issues with the SC stirring
arms, off to HD after church to do an engineering assessment/purchase.
