Topic: OT (mostly) more starbucks changes (12 msgs / 269 lines)

Mostly OT is not totally OT. What can you do if it is all OT? Go through the
pockets and look for loose change.
But I digress with quotes from one of the funniest and most quotable movies
of all time.
The article at reutershttp://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSN1932070520080319?pageNumber=2&virtualBrandChannel150&sp=truementions US economic tailspin... And SBUX will respond by customer loyalty
programs like free caramel or soy milk. And new machines-- he found a
rationale to get rid of the expensive automatics, I think.
The interesting points, besides the US economic tailspin
   - Starbucks said it will woo cash-strapped consumers by roasting
   coffee a new way,
   - delving into new categories, such as the health and wellness
business by the end of the year.
   - Baristas will be able to see customers over new low machines.
   - Under the loyalty program due to begin in mid-April, consumers will
purchase their coffee, but extras like caramel sauce or soy milk will be
   free, Starbucks said.
I am wondering what the new way to roast coffee is... and that brings it
back to mostly on-topic. Perhaps... they've seen the light and will have
non-burnt offerings?

For the price they are charging for that swill... the poofter fillers
they are offering to taint it with better be free. That syrupy crap is
pretty cheap actually to buy. It'd be like you going to a restaraunt
ordering a cup of coffee and them telling the teaspoon full of sugar or
the little creamer bucket is an extra 35 cents.
But ditto here, I wonder what the new roasting method is. Burn it
slower?  slow char it?  ::shrug::

No worries of that here! I was just opining on the sell off of the
perfectly usable LaMarzocco's a few years ago when they upgraded to the
supers. Now, back on the block. Wonder what will replace them this time?
And I never drink their espresso - just drip when I have to.

Found a live-blog of the annual meeting which describes the new machine: the
Mastrena
specific advantages:
-the shorter machine means that you will now be able to look your barista in
the eye
-it creates denser, creamier foam
-a digital timer allows the barista to manage the quality of every single
shot of espresso
-and the biggest change - coffee is ground fresh for every shot . http://www.portfolio.com/views/blogs/daily-brief/2008/03/19/live-blogging-the-starbucks-annual-meeting-introducing-the-mastrena

Whoa, Starbuck bought the company that makes the Clover.
"Zander Nosler, right, co-founder of the Coffee Equipment Company,
which makes the "Clover" coffee brewing machine, looks on as Starbucks
Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Howard Schultz, left, drinks a cup
of coffee brewed with the machine Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at
Starbucks' annual shareholders meeting in Seattle. Schultz announced
at the meeting that Starbucks has bought Nosler's company and will use
the machines in some Starbucks stores."

Geez... well, maybe it will be more accessible now. Yup, went to the clover
site to find that Austin location, and entrance page announces the sale.
I'm going to try my first clover cup today-- passing through Austin on my
way to go camping with the kids and will stop at JP Java's to have a cup.

Has it been mentioned that Starbucks just bought Coffee Equipment
Company? That's Clover. Seems like a pretty serious and savvy move to me.
