I feel your pain. I see why it bothers you. If the Clover acquisition puts
the small/independent coffee shop in a tighter squeeze then that is bad bad
bad. I read the new *$ Initiativeshttp://www.starbucks.com/aboutus/pressdesc.asp?idů0and it looks like it is going to hit Independents hard. They are going to
not only roll out Clovers and hyped new espresso machines, but build
customer loyalty with rewards and emphasize their social
responsibility--things that tug at a customer's emotional bond with the
company. We have a couple of Independent shops around here (Wake Forest, NC)
and I go to them intentionally to avoid *$. None of them have Clovers. But a
Clover with a giltzy sales campaign will definitely draw people to what will
be claimed as the "best cup of coffee in the world."
What can the Independent do to protect against the juggernaut? This is the
same thing going on with all kinds of gargantuan monopolizing companies from
Walmart to you name it--that demolish little guys--who can't compete. Ahhh,
capitalism. I'd say that the shop must to do something that is aesthetically
unique, above and outside *$ ability. It's hard to do and stay competitive
on price. Our shops here cost more but deliver less. I'll still visit them
out of principle.

If the small shop takes time to roast well, grind fresh, and brew
beautifully, Starbucks won't have a chance...
If the small shop does an average roast, with medium grade beans, and
brews at 172 degrees +- 40, then the clover will put competition out
of reach...
But we don't need a law, or like the people blocking the riveway at
Lockheed in West Philadelphia yesterday, a protest.
We could support the shop working to do it right...
