Topic: SO Espresso Recommendation (10 msgs / 226 lines)
1) From: Seth Grandeau
I'm roasting a batch as a gift for a co-worker who uses a super automatic
espresso maker. Which of these three would you recommend?
Sumatra Classic Mandheling
Bali Kintamani Arabica
Sulawesi "Mount Ella"
I've enjoyed all three for drip coffee, but was wondering which would make a
nice gift for an espresso drinker.
Thanks.

They are all good and all make a nice gift... Do you have any clues
as to what the co-worker prefers? For example, I prefer the
chocolatey/cocoay tasting beans, Colombia at the top, Uganda
Bugisu....
If you don't know, then roast whichever you like best, and give it...
2 cents.
your mileage may vary

Sumatran would probably provide an expected classic taste. All of them are beautiful. I happen to prefer centrals and south americans

Hi Seth,
I drink all of these and have them all roasted right now. As SO
espresso, I like them all but prefer the Sumatra Classic Mandheling at
FC+ or the Sulawesi at FC. To me, the Bali is just a little too bright
in the cup as espresso, but make wonderful FP (or cappuccino). Now,
understand I am not any kind of expert in espresso, and do not have a
super automatic espresso machine, so your friend might not like them as
much as I do. ;-) But they sure are good in my Gaggia Carezza.
Any of the choices should be good though.
Best Regards,
Ken B

One of my favorite SO shots of all time is Classic Mandheling.

I am pulling amazing espresso shots with some week old Brazilian

I appreciate all the feedback. I've decided to go with the Sumatra Classic
Mandheling. I think I got it right to FC+.
Ken, I just got my Carezza. I'm enjoying it, though it keeps telling me I
need a better grinder. :)

I saw the header and was thinking "what was that really unique SO I
had a couple weeks ago?". Decided to sort the post and saw you have
the ONE I was thinking of. It was the Bali! I found it bright as
drip but found it really great as a shot. Not bright at all. I am
not a bright fan. I would try the Bali also, but as it is a one time
gift and already done, make sure you try the Bali for yourself.

Heh, mine has told me lots of things...change the gasket, de-scale
regularly, get a better grinder, learn more about espresso, etc., etc.
It is almost like being married. ;-)
But yes, I updated my grinder with a Breville conical burr model that I
am sure is not the best, but is much better than what I had, and cost
well less than $100. The pucks seem to be back to the correct
consistency since I changed the gasket and did a really good de-scale on
it, and more importantly, the creama is back and it is making really
nice shots again. :-)
Tonight I did a double of the El Salvador Matalapa Estate. The praline
came through even in the espresso, with lots of creama. This El
Salvador is really good, and I usually prefer the Asian coffees.
Good luck with your friend and your Carezza.

John,
What roast level did you use? What machine did you make yours in? Mine
was a City+, made in the Carezza. I wonder why I find it a bit too
bright, and you find no brightness at all? Different taste buds? Or
maybe I just like brightness even less than you do? ;-)
As FP, drip, or cappuccino, I like the Bali, a lot. But as a straight SO
espresso, I prefer the Mandheling or Enrakang.
Best Regards,
Ken B
