I am new to this list and new to home roasting and purist coffee consumption in general. But after a couple of weeks of reading these posts, I must say to 95% of you, GET A LIFE. Enjoy coffee the way you like it. Stop bashing Starbucks. If you don't like the service they provide, don't go there. Relax, Don't Worry, Have a Homebrew.

Bashing *$ is what people on this list do when they can't think of anything
interesting to say.
And bashing people who bash other peoples posts is pretty popular, too.
Posting a complaint about the list tends to increase the volume of the type
of messages you complain about.
Reading any post headed OT or containing *$ may suck you into the bipolar
whirlpool of rage and despair.
Taking advice from anyone you've never actually met is misguided.

Larry, there's always the option to come on list and post something
informative, something that offers personal opinion of roasting,
grinding, brewing, storing or gifting of coffee...
It's always a wonder to read from the young disciple who shows up only
to advise others on where to get a life (It's in the games section at
K-Mart).
This is not about bashing. It's about non-contribution, followed by a
holier than thou attitude to folks who do their best to help others
perfect the craft of great coffee...

We are going to disagree from time to time, but that does not mean we should
be disagreeable.
I began consuming beverages like coffee and pipe tobacco socially, as they
provided an opportunity to share in something complex and wonderful while
maintaining productive, meaningful discussion. I have had some of the most
challenging talks of my life over coffee and a pipe. These beverages by
necessity cause us to stop and think, stop and listen, and sometimes just
stop. I previously said that we should stop bashing *$, and was in many
ways laughed at. Actually, the comments that followed were overwhelmingly
funny. However, the reasoning still stands. Though it may be fun to name
call and employ our superior wit to coax a chuckle, it is base and
superficial, and wholly unproductive. In my humble opinion, it would be a
far more noble endeavor to challenge each other to think critically and
logically about our craft, our passions. To support and encourage each
lister to cultivate their appreciation for, and skill in producing, coffee.
And so I leave you to your musings while I engage in one of my favorite
activities, reading and drinking coffee. The Mind of God and Guatemala
Huehuetenango Finca San Vicente...

Stan,
I do so appreciate your support, but if I may, you seemed to have missed my
point as well. Name-calling perpetuates name-calling. I think it is clear
a few members of the list, though well educated, may not realize how
rudeness destroys the effectiveness of social conversation and is, to be
sure, a thing to be ashamed of.
I thought I would take this opportunity to express my opinion on how things
ought to be, with my newbie status in tow. If you disagree, as I previously
described, that is perfectly acceptable. If you choose to be disagreeable
in response... well, you are so kindly discrediting yourself by sharing with
every lister your level of maturity. Please know I hardly think I am better
or more important than you all. I'm only 25 and don't know much of
anything. However, I do believe I am making a good point. Refute it with
sound reasoning and I will admit my error and we will all be better for it.
I am not a lurker. I have been roasting for 4 months and love learning
about coffee here on the list. think skin... friend, you can't touch me.

from the peanut gallery, it's a great list.

It's pretty simple larry to avoid that which you dont want to see.
It's called a mail filter. Most grammar school children learned how to
use them in their school classes. Might want to ask your kids if you
are having problems figuring out how to set one up. Depending on which
program you are using, sometimes they are called parental controls,
offering adult invervention to protect the children and those unable to
make decisions for themselves.
If you know how to search the archives (again, if this is a problem, a
child or one of the neighbors kids i am sure can show you) will return
many posts to the list by the other members who have explained this
numerous times how to do such. I would post the instructions here to
help you but I am not too good myself with the various programs out
here, so rather than steer you wrong, would rather you read what the
others have said about how to set your stuff up properly to protect you
from having to read contrary opinions.
Cheers and enjoy the coffee!!

Thanks for the advice, Aaron, but none of that is new to me, or relevant
either. I don't mind dealing with all the stuff that passes through, though
it can be a pain when the content wanders too far away from the subject
line. I also enjoy hearing contrary opinions from thoughtful people. I
just thought I'd suggest to the newbee that it is possible to enjoy the list
without getting too pissed off about some the posts. And I also thought
that the occasional reminder about who owns the list and what its purpose is
might be helpful. Do you really have a problem with that?

We need a NewBie Advisory Group. The NewBie Advisory Group (NAG) can
just come online, and tell us all how we should behave. In fact, to
be fair, this should be opened up to not only NewBie Roasters, but
also to NewBie Non-Roasters.
No need to contribute, just observe, then step in and chastise. It's
what we have needed for so long - a good NAG...
