Topic: Possible West Michigan Meetup? (13 msgs / 333 lines)
1) From:
I know when I first got back on list a month or so ago, I found out there
were several listers from west Michigan. I also know of several home
roasters around us that are not on the list. I am wondering if folks would
be interested in getting together at some point. I have talked to Rodney at
Sozo's coffee in Ionia wwww.sozocoffee.com about using his shop for a
gathering and he is all for it. He started roasting in a popcorn popper at
home and now is in the business, he as offered to let us come in after hours
(they close at 3:00 PM) and get together, he has offered to demo his roaster
if we were interested and would be a good chance to drink some coffee and
share ideas. If anyone is as retentive as I am you might be interested in
the spreadsheet I am running for coffee inventory. Once it is set up, I
just enter in what batches are roasted and it updates my inventory it total
weight, number of roast batches and dollar value, it is a great way to stay
on top of what you have and when you need to order, I would be more than
happy to provide it to anyone who wants it.
Happy roasting
David

Hi David,
I live in East Lansing and would love to see what Sozo's has to offer. I've
only been to one coffee shop in MI that I thought was worth going back to
and that was way over in Ypsilianti (sp?) at Ugly Mug. I didn't think there
were any other roasters near me so I started roasting.
Let me know when you were thinking of heading over there and we'll see if we
can make it work!

I am in Howell which is not real close, but I would try to make it if you
set something up.

Additionally, Jack Groot from JP's Coffee in Holland said that he would love to have a get together sometime. They have a huge operation over there and do some really great work. Jack writes a column for Specialty Coffee Retailer Magazine and has been a help to previous shops that I have worked at in the past. He also does a lot of work with promoting barista training for cafe's and educating his customers. I know that they do not roast their own, but also dont know who they use. They told me in an email that I sent to them that they don't keep beans over a week and they go through about 400 pounds a week, so it's never really an issue. I think we should probably check them out at some point as well. Farther for some of you, closer for me! haha I don't think I will be able to make it to this get together. I recently lost my job and I really have to watch the $$ right now. A 3 hour round trip drive with gas around 3.30-3.50 really isn't going to help much. Next
 time!

That sounds like an interesting spot to check out. It also sounds like, if
the interest is there then we could possible turn this into some sort of
semi regular meeting. I see lots of advantages, including buying larger
quantity of beans and dividing them up (a co-op of sorts)? Should be
interesting to see how it plays out.
Where would you have to come from for the Ionia meeting?

I know paw paw. I have not heard much as far as day and time preferences.
I am guessing that I will just wind up picking a date and saying this is it.
I am thinking the next two weeks?

Later the better for me (like date, not necessarily time) because perhaps by then I will have a new job and be able to afford the drive, but at this point I'm still a "no-go."

Haha... um... well, short answer is no, not in my opinion. Waterstreet Coffee Joint is alright, but it TOTALLY depends on the barista. They roast their own and do a decent job (albeit a little too dark, too often IMHO); but too often from my experience the barista will MURDER a shot. (More times than I can count on one hand I have had the grinder not turn on- doser is full...- and be handed a more or less crema-free drink in what should be a traditional cappuccino cup, filled to the top... yummm, nothing like the extreme lungo!). Unfortunately, the owner is a great guy, so I get really split on whether or not I truly like or dislike his company... No, I love to travel for coffee, it's just that right now I can't afford it. Back when I had a job (those were the days... haha) I would travel to Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti (Zingerman's/Ugly Mug Cafe) once a week and Chicago (The "Big I" and Metropolis) once a month or more. Give me time... haha.
