Right! and another thing: Starbucks is about bucks (four bucks a cup to be
specific). Period. That's why I own some of their stock. How many billions
and billions of burgers has McD's made? They don't want to make good
burgers, they want to make $$ and like *$, they have found a sweet spot
between quality and quantity for doing that.
I agree with somebody else on this list (Brett maybe, don't remember who
said it): let's hope *$ doesn't start showing an interest in the kind of
coffees we on this list like, because that will only drive up the
price/demand, and they'll deplete the best specialty coffee lots. I think
some other coffee sage (Tom? maybe) said too that without billions of people
out there drinking the low grade coffee, we would not be able to have the
cream-of-the-crop lots that we get through SM. So, we need *$ and folgers,
and maxwell to serve up all the low grade coffee. Just think of all the
truly great coffee in the past that got blended with tons of robusta to
make those low grade coffees. Now we get to skim some of those off.
So I say, let the Clovers roll. They are going to stuff them with mediocre
beans to make big bucks.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
What seems to be lost in all of this discussion is that there has been
a way for coffee shops to extract the best out of their coffee beans
for quite a while. It's called an espresso machine. Starbucks has
never learned how to use one and never learned how to roast their
coffee for one either. How is the Clover going to change this? It
won't. Starbucks hasn't learned a thing about coffee in all their
years of business. For the most part they have made a good business
of selling flavored milk drinks to the masses. Any true coffee shop
will be able to compete with that business model.
