My first post to this list was to ask for advice about purchasing a roaster
and grinder. I had $500 to spend, and probably could spend about the same
in a few months. The consensus was to get a grinder first. I was about to
do that, but fate intervened and I broke my FreshRoast. So, I ended up
buying the Behmor, that with shipping cost me ~$315. Then, yesterday, I
scored a used Rocky on Coffee Geeks for $165, including shipping. If anyone
is counting, I still have ~$20 to spare. Life is good!
I love it when a (plan?) comes together.

$20 left.... I suggest celebrating with a six pack of really good
Porter! (And you will have change back from your $20....)

Bill,
Depending on how used that Rocky is, put the extra $20 toward new
burrs for the Rocky and you are all set.
It is good to hear that things really work out for you!

Thanks for the advice. Now I need to know what to look for to determine if
the burrs need to be replaced, and where to get them. The seller says he
had the grinder in his office since 12/05 and cleaned it regularly. He also
said that he did the tape mod but removed it. Since I don't know what the
tape mod is, I don't know whether that is a good thing or not.
I think I will go ahead and get a new set of burrs, figuring that I will
need them sooner or later, anyway.

Congrats on the great deals. Buying a used grinder? Definitely replace the
burrs, period. FWIW Rocky should have his burrs replaced every 75 to 100#.
The "tape mod" makes for a much cleaner doser aka grinds dispenser sweep.
Beneficial but not critical.

The seller may also be referring to the Teflon tape mod to reduce
slop/wobbling on the burr threads.http://www.home-barista.com/forums/rocky-thread-slop-and-teflon-tape-fix-t1288.htmlA few wraps of Teflon tape around the upper burr carrier on my Rocky
Doserless brought my zero point down a few notches. It helped improve shots
on my Silvia (grind slightly finer w/o the sound of the burrs touching)
although I'm not sure how much of a difference it would make for other
brewing methods needing a grind coarser than espresso.
