HomeRoast Digest

Topic: Off topic conversation and the digest subscribers (8 msgs / 180 lines)
1) From: Floyd Lozano
Hey folks, and Tom (which I guess is folks too)
After the recent 'discussion' regarding some hot button off topic
stuff, I have a suggestion, if this isn't already in place. I think
there should be a subject heading (and maybe OT is a good one) that
gets dropped from the digest mail so that the folks who subscribe to
digest for whatever reason don't get pounded wth offtopic emails. And
if they want them, they can subscribe to Gmail or whatever else ;)
It's just a suggestion, feel free to verbally flog me regarding
censorship, the free web based autothreading software with delete
filters, yadda yadda and every other possible solution out there. I
simply suggest this as an easy way to help those that subscribe to
digest for coffee info and coffee info only, and not cafeklatch.

How about a separate OT mailing list so this one can get back to coffee?

Hey Floyd & Terry,
What's in your cup today?
How about joining in the brewer comparison, and sharing your coffee
observations?
The other way to enhance the list is to participate in the coffee
discussion. Care to join?

I am also a member of another list that relates to BBQ. They also had a
problem with too much OT posting, especially political stuff. The list
owner reduced the inflammatory posts a lot by setting up a separate list
called the Back Porch. On this list, no topic is off limits. The main BBQ
list still drifts OT often, but they avoid the hot button issues. I am not
suggesting that Tom set this up as he already has enough to do, but perhaps
one of the tech savvy members of this list could set something up. It could
be called the back table, the coffee table, or ???. Then if people want to
discuss global warming, light bulbs, political hypocrisy, religion, etc.,
they could go there and leave the main list for coffee discussion. Anyone
interested in setting something like this up? I would do it, but I don't
know how.

5) From: Tom & Maria - Sweet Maria's Coffee
It's possible to do it on this list by having OT being a separate
topic that you would subscribe to, if you wanted. That wouldn't take
care of the problem. What would is to have a mutual respect for
differing opinions, and respect for all those whose Inbox is getting
spammed by OT posts. I have put the entire list on moderation for
now, and several people are on permanent moderation. Name calling is
not permitted on this list, period.

I can appreciate the dilemma of being on a digest. You are forced to
scroll past every email whether you want to read them or not. That right
there is one of the reasons I would never get on one. I would rather
filter the emails into a folder and thread them in my Thuderbird. Much
more flexible that way and they don't get in the way of my regular mail.
But, unless they've updated Mailman at some point, I know from previous
experience there's no option in the software to filter out certain
things from the digest. Its either digested or you get them separately.
So unless we get some news that there is a mod out there which can do
that, my guess is your stuck and your best bet would be to get them
individually, set up a rule in your email client to filter them into a
separate folder, thread them...or use something like Gmail. But that's
your call.
However, and this might be a suggestion, if Tom has an RSS feed, it
might be possible to filter them out with that. But then while it would
automatically be in a separate folder, it wouldn't be a digest either,
if you're really set on seeing only one email a day fly into your inbox.
If it is possible, I would agree, that might be a nice option for some
people.

I'll back Mike on this one. Another forum I belong to, Woodnet.net, is devoted to woodworking. There are 9 different
topic headings and you can participate in any or all of them. One of the headings is simply labeled Off Topic and
handles anything and everything that isn't devoted to woodworking. The rules are basically to behave in a civilized
manner.
