Topic: Important Test: Homeroast list "Topics Setting" (14 msgs / 436 lines)
1) From: Tom & Maria - Sweet Maria's Coffee
Hi all,
I am experimenting with a "Topics" setting... here's the option you
are now given on your personal settings page.
Which topic categories would you like to subscribe to?
By selecting one or more topics, you can filter the traffic on the
mailing list, so as to receive only a subset of the messages. If a
message matches one of your selected topics, then you will get the
message, otherwise you will not.
If a message does not match any topic, the delivery rule depends on
the setting of the option below. If you do not select any topics of
interest, you will get all the messages sent to the mailing list.
There are 2 "Topic Buckets":
1: OT
2: Home Roasting and Coffee
If you don't have your welcome email, you can get to your personal
setting page by using this link and changing you--at--you.com to your
email but you NEED to use the -- format just like below , not an @
symbol : http://lists.sweetmariascoffee.com/options.cgi/homeroast-sweetmariascoffee.com/you--at--you.comI am just testing this out, I need a few people to try it out so we
can see if it works.
A post is filtered into the OT bucket if it has OT in the subject
A post is filtered into the Home Roasting and Coffee bucket if it
mentions coffee, espresso, roasting, and some other keywords in the
subject or in the first few lines of the message body.
I have taken this list off moderation to see how this works. We will
continue to moderate all messages on this list when we have postings
that break the list rules, in particular, OT spam messages seeking to
bait others into a war of words, or name calling. Members who do
either will be set to permenant moderation.
If you can't tell, I am incredibly pissed to waste my time
babysitting the list when I have reviews to write and coffees to cup.
This has set back the announcement of 6 new arrivals by at least 36
hours. Not only do list problems insult all those who read the list
for true coffee content, they damage my business personally and
directly. I have had enough.
Tom

Thanks Tom,
I will now receive the topics that interest me! Now what about those new
offerings?

3) From: Les
I am sorry it has come to this Tom. I am on a Pen Turning list with many
more members than this. They are much more behaved. They only allow
off-topic on Tuesdays. If you break the rules you are booted off right
away There is no mercy. I have held off my next order in anticipation of
some of those new offerings, so you are correct that it has hurt your
business. So, I would encourage everyone to abide more by the rules. On a
personal note, I have been enjoying the daily reports of what people are
enjoying.

Thank you very much, Tom.
I did go make a selection to see if it works ... as a volunteer I guess.
I am looking forward to the 6 new listings because I am in the middle
of creating another order.
Thanks again,

and respect all your hard work bringing us the best coffee in the
world and providing this virtual coffee shop for us to hang out in.
Thanks,

while back but I did not do anything to get it, anyway, I guess I am
now a tester for non OT topics.

Tom,
I understand your frustration, and I appreciate your effort, but in the
long run this will not work. Most messages seeking to bait others into a
war of words begin in on-topic threads with subtle references to this or
that. After a few dozen of those, someone inevitably gets sucked in, and
then the schoolyard bullying begins. At that point it's usually switched
to an OT thread. I hate bullying, and after a dozen or so ugly,
derogatory posts I sometimes (but not always) say "enough is enough" and
jump in. It's wrong, but I do. I never instigate this process.
Flagrant baiting to draw people into off topic subjects in any threads,
whether those threads are on topic or off, is what needs to be dealt
with.. Derogatory statements by any member to any member should be dealt
with immediately, not later. With all this brouhaha it will diminish for
a while, but before you know it the little stings and jabs in on-topic
threads will resume. Unless they are nipped in the bud, we'll eventually
be right back where we started. There are very few offenders, and IMHO
the only lasting solution is to permanently moderate them, or otherwise
deal with them. IMHO it should have been done a long time ago, and I
don't know why is wasn't.. But that's none of my business.

Tom posted a message, that you obviously did not receive that explained
that the filter idea did not function selectively. Selecting any filter
will STOP all messages. Go back and de-select all filters..

Yes, Rich is correct, the filtering stopped all delivery to those who
selected topics. I don't understand why, and we tried out a bunch of
configurations. The only possibility is that we needed to use
"RegExp" syntax, something we don't understand too well over here.
But that is a longshot ... will keep looking for a way to have the
list perform better. -Tom
PS: please remember that delivery of messages might not be instant
since there is some moderation of the list now.
