Topic: Partially roasted coffee (8 msgs / 180 lines)
1) From: Bill Allison
I have seen several posts about "stalled out" roasts, but I have not seen
any about what to do with those beans. Are they just compost material? I
don't have a stalled-out roast, but I do have a pound that only went 6
minutes on a profile that should have taken about 12 minutes to get to first
crack. Are they trash? What is the likelihood of getting a drinkable roast
out of them now?
Thanks.

The flavors will be muted, but I would just re-roast.

Bill,
This past weekend I wasn't paying attention and ran out of propane while
roasting 2.5 pounds of the Brazil Moreninha Formosa. I tried swapping the
tanks quickly, but forgot to shut off the burners first, etc. Long story
short, those beans are now fertilizing the back yard and feeding the local
wildlife. There have been an inordinate number of energetic turtles in the
back yard lately, including a snapping turtle that found his way to the
driveway. I am not sure if he was actually trying to steal the car, but he
was very belligerent and sure did want a taste of my hand.
"Are they trash?"
They are around here.

So many wonderful coffees, so little time ... pursue exquisite elixir ...
eschew drinkable ... ;-)

HAHahahahaha! Seems a bit unfair to caffeinate turtles, Eddie - all that
energy and no good way to burn it.
It's an eternal debate with me: waste not, want not vs. life's too short to
drink bad (or even mediocre) coffee.

Thanks for all the response, on and off list. The responses were varied and
some outright contradictory. I have trashed the beans.

Eddie,
I think that you have hit upon the key to turning mere turtles into
attack turtles. It is all in the coffee. Who needs mutant ninja
turtles when all it takes is a few coffee beans? Let us know how the
turtle luwak turns out.
