Sandy,
My trick for getting the shower screen off my Silvia, is to put a
small screwdrivers SIDEWAYS into the screw slot. (e.g. the
screwdriver should be parallel to the shower screen), then turn. You
get a lot more torque this way, and don't need a short screwdriver.
Your tank water heating issue sounds like a leaky over pressure valve.
It might be gunked up with scale, or the washer might be dried out.
If you look in the tank with the pump running, but no portafilter
installed, you should see no flow from the shorter of the two hoses.
If you put in your blind filter basket, you should see a steady
trickle from the hose, but not gushing. If it's gushing, if it's
leaking when you have no portafilter, or of it's leaking with no pump
running, you have a borked overpressure valve (and an extreme run of
bad luck with espresso machines).
It's fairly easy to open the valve, you just loosen the nut where the
silicone hose connects to the boiler. There's some good instructions
if you do a google search for the silvia OPV mod.
