First run it without coffee, use water only, to check the integrity of the
gasket. Then use the cloth filter until you are sure the grind is right.
After you are thoroughly comfortable with the brewer go to the glass rod.
You will experience a lot less frustration.

defer my own thoughts to the List...

Ok Vac Pot arrived about 30 min ago...YEAAAAA UPS!!!!
I washed it
I did a water only run
I ground up 5 blue SCAA scoops
I pre-heated the H2O in the tea kettle
I put the hot water in the bottom of the Vac
I put the grounds in the top
I put them together and turned on the heat
the water moved up I waited 60 seconds removed it from the heat
60 sec later all the coffee was in the bottom
I removed the top and poured a cup.....
Is is supposed to be this Strong?
GOOD GRIEF this is almost as strong as espresso
did I use the right amount of coffee?....check
did I grind right?....(little finer than drip no pinching clumps)...check
did I use the right amount of water?....check at the 5
was infusion the right amount of time?... 60 sec up 60 sec hold 60 sec
drop....check
I was not expecting this...WOW I will be wired for hours BTW my mug is
the same size so the Yama 5 Cup makes 1 cup for me....
(pondering do I reduce the amount of coffee or grind coarser if I want
to sleep tonight?)
Thoughts?
This is a great cup AWESOME FLAVOR but I could cut it with 30% more
water and be fine

Those pots were designed for coffee ground in hand crank grinders by
lazy people, grind coarse. Put water in bottom, install top, add BTUs
to boil, add coffee, stir, remove from heat. Yes they make strong
coffee. Just like USN Extra Strong except it will be drinkable and will
not corrode 304L stainless steel. If you get the water on top first and
then add coffee the fines will not end up blocking the drainer as they
are still floating as the atmospheric pressure shoves the water/coffee
into the bottom pot.

6) From: Bill
I've always figured that amount of grinds is a starting point. So if it's
strong to you, then I'd reduce the grounds, maybe to 4 scoops, see how that
is... key is what you like. or reduce the steep time. or grind coarser.
and remember, just because it's strong tasting doesn't mean it contains more
caffeine than other methods... but it might!!! hope you aren't up all
night!!!
I'm jonesing for a vac pot, i'll be honest with you. Next order of beans
will have a Yama 5 cupper in it. So i'm glad to hear that you liked yours,
Dennis. What other brewing method have you used? I'm a french presser, but
am excited about the vac pot...
thanks for the report

Yeah, what I hear about VP makes me think it would be a good way to go... I
like the FP except for the sediment... we'll see... it'll be a few weeks
before I make another order... but always it depends on what Tom offers
next!bill

Don't throw away your presspot.
If you are like me, you will go back and forth between different brewing
methods with the mood and the time available. I love vac pot brewed coffee
but as we saw a few weeks ago in out brewer throwdown, all can be made to
produce good but different beverages. Last night I had another cop of
Mexican decaf through the Vietnameese filter onto a tablespoonfull of
sweetened condensed milk. It hardly mixes at all and I like to spoon up the
sweet candy through the coffee and eat it warm off the spoon and then
counter with the hot unsweetened coffee off the top. This morning my first
cup was a very unsatisfactory paper filter pour that removed most of the
flavor from a City roasted Guatemalan Antigua Y. B. That was followed by the
same coffee from the French Press because I *needed* that sediment.
I'm excited about the little ibrik I've ordered...

I'll keep my FP for 2 reasons: 1 it was a gift from a list member(thank
you) and 2 I really want to have MORE ways to make coffee Not getting
rid of anything
Every way has it's pluses and minuses so I'll be keeping mine
