Ivan,
Kurmudgeons don't do List "Easy":-)
FWIW I wasn't suggesting or advocating going out and buying a USRC, indeed
few can afford such a luxury. I never could when strictly roasting for
personal use. Or rather could have back when working IT if making it a
priority over other luxuries but chose not to. But the stated analogy of
being GIVEN a commercial roaster and not being able to afford to run it,
that was what I was replying to as off base.

Trust me I've nothing against home roasting on the cheap. No need to defend
roasting with simple inexpensive tools, just as there's no need to defend
roasting with a commercial roaster.

Mike,
You know I like building and using my own roaster.
Maybe it is too complicated, and I do not want to get PID gas valves,
but I bet if you described your USRC I could come up with a reasonable
facsimile. ;)
What I need to know is: Can you describe the dimensions of the drum?
The fire path and where the burner is situated?
Does the flame impinge on the drum or does it heat air in a separate
chamber?
Is the drum made with an open end that butts a stationary plate through
which the coffee is added, sampled and dumped?
Any information you can supply will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much,
PeterZ
Here in LHC where it just might get to 100F today! :)
