I can't believe that I am the first to report on this different beverage. I have been out of state for 4 days and my new Yemens were at home. No reports from the group on the new coffees. I am going to be blunt here. I sure would enjoy a lot more talk about coffee on this list. Just think, Tom went to a way out of the way place, a dangerous place, to find us great coffee and then he brings us something way different. The only thing on the list is silence and discussions about other coffee things. It is kind of like talking about the box that your Christmas presents come in rather than the present. I didn't brew it strong enough, but it is a unique. I would have to say it is one of the best herbal teas I have had in a long time. It doesn't taste like coffee! <Snip> Yes, it makes a very nice herbal tea, and is surprisingly sweet (but not cloying). We brewed about 3 blue plastic SM scoops worth in about 20 oz of water for 10-15 minutes. Does not seem to have too much caffeine -- it's not keeping me awake... :) It does not taste coffee-like, though the dry Qishr smells somewhat like unroasted beans. Delicious, and recommended! Unfortunately, we couldn't get that much of it. We had figured that
it could ship with coffee, and be listed on the manifest for the
shipment as coffee, since it is part of the coffee fruit. It was a
concern, but it worked out fine. I had always heard that the skin was
more expensive than the seed in Yemen, but it wasn't really true.
They are about the same but 1 Lb of Qishr is quite a large volume due
to light weight. I do think it needs a lot of steeping. It's fun to
try it out "cupping style" at first - simply add one scoop to a
cup/bowl and pour 5-8 oz. hot, hot water over it. Most of it will
sink and you can have a sip at 4 minutes, 6 minutes .... see how the
flavor changes. I guarantee you that at 4 minutes it seems weak. But
then again this is using the whole pod, whereas in Yemen they use a
mortar and pestle to pulverize it - which probably makes it steep a
lot faster. Like Mike, I like the irony of "a cup of coffee tea" ...
or coffee-tea, ...

this might be able to get more, and we are almost out of the initial

I like it, it's a worthwhile experience, but I'm not a tea drinker and I would probably not keep it around. I'm very appreciative on having the opportunity to try it though. The first time I made it in a french press, which limited how dark it got. I found that just having it sit in the cup it eventually (10 minutes or more) gets really good. I fear though that it might give me a headache. The last couple of times I've tried it, I've ended up with a headache about an hour later -- could be coincidence, though I find that chamomile gives me a headache too, which is odd because chamomile is supposed to be a headache remedy. -Peter On Apr 25, 2008, at 12:07 PM, Tom & Maria - Sweet Maria's Coffee wrote: <Snip> Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.homeroasting.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://lists.sweetmariascoffee.com/listinfo.cgi/homeroast-sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures 9upload yours!) :http://www.homeroasting.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20 |

Tom, I have enjoyed having the Qishr around, but probably more for the novelty or uniqueness of serving a coffee tea. I wouldn't drink this by myself, I'd drink coffee!! But if you routinely had it on your list, I would probably routinely buy it for people who are interested in it... As someone else said, probably not enough to keep you in business. I likely would buy about 1 pound per year, maybe 2, but not more. I really appreciate you making it available for us. It is very interesting and a lot of fun to serve to people. I have preferred it as an infusion, just dumping a lot of husks in a cup and pouring hot water in. I have found that I prefer it steeping for over 20 minutes, and it's awesome in glass mugs where you can see the husks sitting in the water. the green beans in a few of the husks is really cool. Since it is coffee related, I just had to order some even thought I am not a tea drinker. Not wanting a cup of coffee this evening because I drank an entire pot of the Yemen Mokha Sharasi today (YUM!), I ripped and crumpled some into a cup and poured in the water. The phone rang (someone wanting a couple pounds of coffee) and I forgot about it. My wife walks through and just asks, "What's this?" I drank some and was quite surprised! It was sweet and I really liked it. I gave her the cup, and she acted surprised that I would have sweetened it; she liked it too. My son wouldn't be denied and he liked it too. Poured in more hot water and now I have another cup. I bet for the south, this would make a nice "sweet tea." This is really good stuff and we would actually like to keep some around! I just ordered some of the Qishr along with a few coffees to rebuild my = dwindling stash. Here's the thing - two points. Point # 1: I have taken the CSA pledge = and do not drink "production coffee", host coffee or other coffees that = are not fresh roasted or sitting in my cupboard. That said, I find = myself in coffee shops or restaurants every now and then for meetings or = pleasure. Wherever possible, I fill my hot drink needs with a cup of = tea. Maybe a chai. I do enjoy a cup of tea now and then. But not at home. Point # 2: My lovely wife is a tea drinker to the extreme, but she also = enjoys my coffee and occasionally drives me to distraction by bringing = home a cup of *$. Anyway, we have had a remarkable tea stash in the = house since we were married & set up house together. These teas are = every bit as good as any coffee Tom sells. Since I began home roasting, = I seldom drink tea at home. Now there's this Qishr and I may have a tea to drink at home since it's = coffee tea. It appears it is quite good from all the reviews it has = received here, I think I will enjoy it very much and will keep it in the = house for all three of us since Nicolas is a tea drinker, too. As long as there's coffee tea, I'll probably be ordering it. And = drinking it. And liking it. To add to the list, I too would hope to have some around, and if you purchased new ones, I would certainly try those. I do like a cup of tea occasionally, and have bought some teas from here and there. I have a good friend who runs a bookstore, and he specializes in teas, and I've gotten a few from him. My wife and kids drink a lot of tea, but mostly store-bought bags. But they do try my other teas when I make a big picture of it. Mostly I drink coffee, but a hot cup of tea in the evenings often hits the spot, as I usually drink coffee all day long, so it makes for a good change of pace. All that to say, I would continue to buy this Yemen tea and try new ones as well. Can't guestimate exactly how much, I still have most of what I bought of the Yemen. Based on the response you've gotten, however, seems like you would be able to sell more lots of it without a problem. :) -- Rick Copplehttp://www.rlcopple.com/Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.homeroasting.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://lists.sweetmariascoffee.com/listinfo.cgi/homeroast-sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures 9upload yours!) :http://www.homeroasting.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20 |
Add me to the list of those who'll buy more Qishr and any others you come up with. One of the nice things about it is that it keeps better than roasted coffee so it's easier to keep some in my briefcase. Easy to make a cup at work, *MUCH* better than the 'coffee' available there and a nice treat. I think I would like to continue to see it as a seasonal thing. I'm not sure how it keeps but I don't see me needing to order a bunch more right away just because I ran out. if you grind it to abut half the original size it will brew quicker as well Steven Van Dyke wrote: <Snip> Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.homeroasting.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://lists.sweetmariascoffee.com/listinfo.cgi/homeroast-sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures 9upload yours!) :http://www.homeroasting.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20 |

I vote yes, keep it coming. I'm just enjoying a cup now. It certainly isn't your average cup of tea, = but I like it a lot and will order more. Now to roast a bit and dig out = the old blade grinder to try that as well. Thanks, Tom, this is delicious.
