I'm so sorry, Sean. Sending my prayers (& sympathy) your way - and for you,
too, John.
Both my parents have passed away (my mom, in 2000, my dad in 1989). It's
never
easy.

Thanks all - trying to sort this all out. Dad donated his body to science
and is being cremated - so no funeral... so I am sitting here feeling like I
should be doing something, and there is nothing to do!
Trying to figure out what mom needs and working from there!
Thank you all again

It has become traditional in our family to give earthly remains to science
and do a memorial service to celebrate the person's life. At that time we
tell stories and remember the good and the bad times. It has helped us in
our grief to have friends and family around. The memorial service is often
planned a week of so later to give folks time to make arrangements for
travel, etc.
Everyone of us has stories of our own. I'm not sure how much help it may be
to share them since they are in all cases different. Different but often
similar. Similar enough to realize that all humans must feel similar grief
in such times. Maybe the best we can do is to call one another "brother".

16) From: Sandy Andina
Sean,
Despite there being no formal funeral, rituals (especially communal
ones) help those left behind comfort each other, acknowledge the fact
of your dad's death (and allow the acceptance and healing process to
begin) and commemorate his life. When my best friend died suddenly
in 2000 and per his prior expressed wishes was cremated the same day,
it definitely felt like the page had not been turned until we held a
BBQ and song-swap in his memory (also per his prior expressed
wishes). He was not a religious or spiritual person so did not want
any kind of service; but in your dad's case I strongly suggest some
sort of memorial service--as much or more for you as for him.

We will do something. Talked to mom today and she said he wanted me to put
half his ashes at the end of "Broadway" on the Eastern Shore of VA in the
bay where I grew up fishing with him and my grandfather and 1/2 in the
Musconetcong River in NJ where he fished as a kid with his dad and he and I
fished when I went home from college...
I also have inherited his Harley and will ride in his memory every time I
ride.
I will ensure he gets his wishes!

I'm glad that you're celebrating his life in a way he'd have wanted,
Sean. Ed had always said he wanted his ashes scattered off his
favorite surfing beach between Oceanside and Encinitas, where he grew
up, and his mom and widow hired a boat and did just that, dividing the
remainder between them for placement into urns. BTW, did you know
that Steve ("A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request") Goodman's ashes are
beneath home plate at Wrigley Field?

20) From: John Brown
funerals are for the living not the dead. it is to be a memorial to the
dead but to remind people they still have a life to lead. it is a way to
end a chapter and begin a new one in the book of life.
when i die i have told my sister not to spend any more money than
strictly necessary to have the remains cremated, i want her to have as
much of what is left of my estate as possible she will need it soon
enough. i have left the rest up to her to do as she thinks best.
