Topic: ER coffee (8 msgs / 163 lines)

When my husband was an R-1 at the UIC Hospital back in 1978, I used
to visit him on on-call nights. We'd sit on the loading dock beneath
the L tracks and wait for the ambulances to come in, drinking the ER
coffee out of (I'm not kidding) paper cups labeled
"Specimen;" I liked to add the Mr. Yuk symbol. Over a
decade later, for the first two years of the series "ER,"
that was where they'd film all of the sequences involving incoming
ambulances. (They eventually built a near- exact replica on the WB
lot).

At the emergency department where I used to work in Boston, the
coffee in the staff lounge was always institutional
cinnamon-roast robusta, brewed triple- or even quad-strength and
then allowed to boil on the hot plate until it was the
consistency of maple syrup. We used to call it "Liquid
Tach;" as the amount of caffeine in one cup was enough to
crank; your heart rate well into the triple digits.

It's probably a good thing our administrators didn't think of that
first. I can only imagine the conversations we'd have to have with
patients...
"Sir, you're suffering an episode of ventricular tachycardia. However,
due to budget cutbacks, we can't afford amiodarone or vasopressin
anymore, so we're going to load you up on bad coffee instead."

Our ED coffee is brewed in an 8x8 beverage room. The putrid smell of the
stale old coffee brewed through the Bunn in there would gag a maggot.

So......do you brew that "ED coffee" with little blue packets from your Pfizer rep? Although, from your description, that coffee would be more likely to cause ED than resolve it!
