Topic: clean those Maestro Pluses!!! (43 lines)
1) From: Bill
Holy Cow!
I replaced the burrs on my Maestro Plus this morning. Didn't take pictures.
Should have. Anybody who owns one needs to clean it better than I did!
I routinely ran either Grindz or rice through the grinder. I washed the top
burr, and the hopper and grind-collector.
However, this was the first time I had removed the center burr. Ugh. I
have no idea what Baratza thinks of this, but I think this needs to be done
once a month. The accumulation on the bottom of the center burr was gross.
Next time, I will run Grindz through it, then pull the center burr to look.
But here's the really gross part. Below the center burr is a wheel-like,
six-pointed spinner thingy. It's job is to spin with the center burr and
push the grinds into the chute to flow into the collector. It's plastic. I
hadn't ever seen it, as I had never removed the center burr. Anyway, it was
gummed up with 15 months of accumulated coffee oil. Not a lot, mind you,
but still... It didn't smell rancid, but still... Where did that oil come
from? Was it from last year's Harar? Or some guat from last June? How
about the Blue Batak or IMV in November? What did it make this morning's
Mandheling taste like? And it was really tough to get off. Soaked in
cleaner for a while, then required a lot of brushing to get it off.
My new commitment: to disassemble the grinder once a month for a thorough
cleaning.
To channel RayO for a moment: Why on earth would I go to all the trouble of
getting Tom to find the world's best coffees, take the time to roast it to
perfection, wait several days to rest it, if I'm just gonna mess it up in my
grinder?
Don't be like me... keep em clean!!!

BTW: a new burr set from Baratza will set you back 20 bucks, plus a few for
shipping. Can you afford not to replace those burrs?
