Topic: Bad vacation espresso (9 msgs / 220 lines)
1) From: Dean De Crisce
it is so frustrating...i can't complain to anyone else that understands. My wife and I are on vacation to LA and SF. Other than a great place in LA (groundworks)...we have stopped at place after place and gotten the worst shots possible. Just got into an argument with a server cause she just gave me an 8 oz double shot of swill. I should have planned better...im sure there are good places here...i just didn't plan it well.
Can't wait to pull a few when I get home.

In LA try Intelegensia and Cafe Lux or come pull a shot or 3 here.

Its just unbelieveable that places routinely give you a full cup of coffee and say that it is espresso. One of these places even roasted their own coffee.
I heard on a podcast that great espresso was a combo of great water, beans, grinder, machine and person (barrista). That place had it all except a trained person. He had no idea why I was complaining about his 35 second 5 oz cup which was supposed to be a 2 oz double shot.
We are on our way home on a red eye to NYC. Tomorrow I look forward
to roasting some Kenya in the Behmor and drinking it as SO espresso at a city roast out of nice sweet marias cups.

Thanks so much for that site...you had posted that before...but I didn't remember it. When I googled best espresso san fran...it listed places but not where we were. I will use that site on our next trip.

You'd be disgusted by how many restaurants, when you order a double
espresso, will use the same amount of ground coffee as for a single,
just let the pump run longer, and charge you the price of an extra
shot for just the extra water. I think from now on when I want a
double I will order two separate singles to be pulled into two
different cups--seriatim, not simultaneously. I think with the
skyrocketing price of everything, especially coffee, this would be a
slam-dunk high-ratings sweeps-week story for a TV consumer or
restaurant reporter.
