Topic: vacu vin redux (45 lines)

Awhile back someone asked if any of us had tried the vacu-vin products
for roasted bean storage. I couldn't find the old message in my gmail
archive. I hadn't tried vacu-vin at that time.
Recently I picked up a three pack of vacu-vin storage containers on
clearance for $19. That's less than the coffee storage one I saw
advertised on the 'net. The plastic isn't coloured for light protection
like the coffee one is, but I keep my beans in a closed cupboard, so
that was not an issue.
The vacu-vin seems to work well. The largest size holds the roasted
beans from a one pound roast. I transfer the beans into the smaller
containers when, through usage, I have developed a lot of head space.
I don't know if the one they sell for beans is different, but I was
surprised that the seal in the container doesn't really form
immediately. I pump (same pump as vacu-vin for wine) until it gets
difficult to do so. If I lift the lid at that point, it just comes off.
If, however, I wait a few hours, the seal is tight and I have to release
it before I can take the tops off.
I did do a mod though ;). For some reason this set came with a (hard to
remove) plastic covering on the underside of the lid. It kept the air
from exiting the container and creating a vacuum. I removed that. They
were designed to be removed, so it's not really not a a mod, but the
instructions looked like they were supposed to be in place during use.
I don't know if I would pay the price Amazon is asking for a single
container, but the deal I got was definitely worth it. In fact, I will
buy a second set and bring one of the middle sized containers in for my
work coffee.
I also don't know how close to a vacuum this kind of thing actually
gets, but it seems to work well. It seems to keep my beans better than
my mason jars did.
