Topic: IMV: Drinking tobacco at FC+ (8 msgs / 152 lines)
1) From: Vicki Smith
Because I didn't really *get* IMV at city +, I decided to try the other
roast level Tom talks about in his review and yesterday roasted a pound
to FC+. I went about 10 seconds into second crack, with 5.5 minutes from
the beginning of first until I pulled the roast in my bread machine.
Total roast time was not quite 15 minutes for a pound.
So now, with about 12 hours rest, I am drinking tobacco. Yup, definitely
a tobacco taste. I didn't get the grape skins Tom mentioned, but perhaps
that will come tomorrow. I'm also hoping that the tobacco flavour
becomes a bit more muted with more rest. I'm not loving it.

Sorry to hear that Vicki, I have found IMV to be one of the most balanced
coffees in the Dry Processed class. I get an amazingly complex cup of
coffee. It begins with Blueberry dropping into a nice currant-plum middle
with a hint of tobacco just before a nice caramel chocolate finish. With
that said, I have never roasted it past a city to city plus level.

Make sure you have some out to at least 7 days if you really want it to
develop it's potential...

This is an echo to both Les' and miKe's sentiments. Two batches of
the Ethiopia Organic Idido Misty Valley DP were roasted in the RK Drum
on April 20th; one batch to City+ and the other to Full City+ (just a
bit into 2nd crack). Both have been great, but today, the Full City+
was stunning. While all of the flavors that Les described were
present, with barely a hint of tobacco, for just a few moments during
cooling it had a wonderful spicy, peppery note. It was an excellent
momentary escape during an otherwise obnoxious day at work.

I always like to taste my first batch shortly after I roast, and then
try it over a number of days. I will make sure I have some left to try
10 days out.
I'm using a blend today--1/2 the IMV and 1/2 a very mild Panama. It's
tasting very good to me this way, today. I will do a small FP of the IMV
FC+ when I get home from work.

this is very odd - i just did my "exit interview roasts" ... i.e. '07
IMV is basically out and I roast it to check character. I had a lot
of blueberry in the lighter roast aromatics, lots of apricot in the
cup, slight hint of jute emerging but very difficult to detect.
darker roast has the same character but diminished somewhat. the odd
thing was how light the roasts appear. you really have to go by
sound, or it would be easy to go way too dark on this coffee. i took
some pics of the roast which I will post soon.

I am pretty much convinced that I can't taste much in the way of fruit
favours in coffee. I get the aromatics, but not the taste. I love the way
the lighter roasts of IMV smell, but the taste didn't do it for me.
I came to very much like the darker IMV (about 10 seconds into 2nd), but not
until about day 5 and beyond. The strong tobacco taste I complained about
at 12 hours rest was very much muted by day 2 and in the cup as just a
pleasant base note later on.

I got the same the other day (well, I didn't notice any jute, but...). I
roasted to City or City+. Grinding is a blueberry bomb, the first time I've
noticed it so strongly. I suspect I've been roasting it too dark. The cup
is full of fruit--the best roast I've had of IMV.
