Topic: OT: Smoke suppression (7 msgs / 186 lines)
1) From: Stephen Carey
Hi, all. I have two roasters, both of which I use. One is the first
I bought, the IR2, and I love it. I also have the Behmor 1600, which
I really love. They present two ways to roast and one day I hope to
learn more ways, but for now this is what I have.
Maybe I should know the answer to this question, but I am lost. I
have read the Behmor literature and can't find an answer that I
really get. It has to do with smoke suppression technology.
The beans heat up, to a high temperature, this, along with the
chemical reactions that go with heating something, produces smoke, as
it does in my IR2 (which I vent to my ceiling fan - turned on) - no
smoke in the house, great smell.
I use the Behmor, I don't connect any duct hose anywhere, but unless
I go too far with the heat or have a small fire I don't get real
smoke, though one of our super sensitive smoke alarms in this small
house will go off. A fan pulls the smoke into what looks like a
filter on the inside top of the Behmor. It comes out as hot air, but
not smokey. I just don't get where it goes. If it is a filter of
some sort, wouldn't I need to change it? It isn't a water filter,
which might work.
I am sorry to seem so dumb, but to me it is magic and really, I am
pretty bright - I must be, I roast my own beans!
Does someone mind pointing me to an article on this or can they
explain it to a lay person?

I'd guess it's a catalyst of some sort that causes the smoke to
finish burning, but that's just a guess.

Magic!

It's a Mystery!
-OR- (when I got old enough that the "mystery" answer no longer worked)
Why do you need to know?
-OR- (my sister's stock answer)
It's a secret that everyone else knows the answer to but you don't!
In other words, I don't have a clue!

My understanding is that it is a ceramic afterburner. The smoke leaves the port in the back and passes by a superhot ceramic piece...not a filter. That piece in essence burns the smoke off, like if you were to put a lighter near a burning incense.
However like you, I rarely see smoke...but I do smell it and it sets off the alarms in my apartment everytime. From another posterbi learned that I am banished to roasting in my bathroom with the door closed and the bathroom fan on. It works...no alarm and my bathroom smells great.

It's not magic
It's not a mystery
It's not your sister's stock answer
It's not a catalytic converter.
It's an electric afterburner. Smoke as we think of it is
incompletely combusted material. A draw fan as you note draws the
smoke past a nichrome coil and incinerates the smoke. That
simple. Or maybe that ingenious. It also draws 5 amps of power that
are not available to go into the beans, but those are the trade offs.

I've heard of TVs in the bathroom, but I think this could be the next big
thing, fresh roasted coffee!

I've never set off the smoke detector with the Behmor, although it
happened rather frequently with the I-Roasts.
