Topic: SCAA 2008 Conference and Joe Behm(or) (9 msgs / 179 lines)
1) From: Brian Zambrano
I got back from the SCAA conference late last night. It was an absolute
blast and the courses which I took were worth every penny. Everyone I met
was super friendly. Dean De Crisce (Deano) from this list was there with
his wife and we were able to meet in person and say hi during our Intro to
Craft Roasting course. I took Intermediate Roasting yesterday (Sunday) and
got to man the controls of a 3 Kg US Roasters machine and talk to Tom who
was one of the station leads....super fun!
By far, the highlight of the trip was having dinner with Joe Behm,
inventor/owner of the Behmor. I wrote some more details

Thank you for the great tour, Brian. I have a friend who went and
cupped with Tom, but I haven't spoken with Kurt yet. Kurt's a pro in the
coffee biz with a tiny roasterie in the gallery where I show my
sculpture. He went for work, so I doubt if he has pictures.. Your
pictures are a great virtual tour! Thanks, again.

I had a blast too. I took the intro roasting class and the comparative
cupping class. It was nice meeting Brian (great pics!) and a lot of
interesting people from Guatemala, Yemen, Mexico, Ethiopia, Italy etc. The
exhibition room was great...all kinds of goodies and cool machines. I
thought the whole deal was pretty cool...it was a quick trip tho (sat and
sun). My wife and I (and I believe Brian) are totally
nonprofessionals...just coffee lovers. I kept thinking...who gets to do
stuff like this?...I am a lucky guy...getting to meet coffee pros and watch
the world barista championships...with my lovely, supportive wife, no less!
She is a tea person and there was cool stuff for her too...although she had
the jitters from the cupping class. lol.
Also picked up some dvds and green samples from all over guatemala, rwanda,
ethiopia, peru and columbia. Today I roasted a volcanic san marcos guatemala
to a city plus in the behmor (7oz at 11.5 min on P3 at 1/2 lb). It was nice
as a SO espresso...sweet, some nuts and orange flavors. It was very nice to
read their handout on the microclimates of Guatemala while drinking the
shot. I hope to make this a regular part of my conference tripping
throughout the years to come (I go to a lot of career related conferences).
Congratulations to Tom on the win. I am happy to know that I am getting the
best greens out there!! Wish that I had the opportunity to interact with him
in the more advanced class. Perhaps next year. Dino. I also wish I had the
know-how to post pics (of this i am clueless).

Brian,
It sounds like a fun trip. I'd love to see the pictures, but I'm currently in the United Arab Emirates and the local ISP has blocked all access to flickr. Apparently the content on flickr is not compatible with Islamic values according to the web page that came up, although I'm quite sure it's not your pictures that are causing flickr to be blocked.
