Hi, On a whim I bought a Zelco BriskBrew Travel Coffeemaker. It's a 1 cup travel coffee maker. Physically it's remarkably small. When packed up, it's 2.5" x 3.5" x 6.25". Since it brews 8 ounces, I tried it with 11.6 grams of PMK ground at my normal filter drip setting. It has a small nylon? and plastic filter basket that measures about 3/4" x 1.75" x 2" and the 11.6 grams filled it more than 3/4th full. Brewing is quite slow taking more than 5 minutes to brew a 8 ounce cup. The water out of the brew head is about 185-190. The brewing comes in small spurts, so it was difficult to get an accurate measurement of the temp. After brewing the coffee in the filter basket had expanded to fill it and force grounds out around the edges. The coffee was pretty strong and a touch bitter. Didn't really taste like Kona. Perhaps over extracted due to the long brew time? Next time I'm going to try a bit less coffee and a courser grind to see what effect that has ... or maybe I'll just change one variable at a time ;-) -Peter Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.homeroasting.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://lists.sweetmariascoffee.com/listinfo.cgi/homeroast-sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures 9upload yours!) :http://www.homeroasting.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20 |

Thanks for the review. I was curious about this brewer too. Let us
know if you find any tweaks to get a decent cup out of it. I have
been looking at some other manual travel brewers that are geared
toward tea but might work for coffee. No good results though ...
nothing that beats an aeropress at least...

i bought a car (12v) coffeemaker and got much better results running water through it once before actually brewing (preheating), as many Mr. Coffee users have reported doing. not sure what temps i actually achieved, just know my cups were much better using this approach. if it still takes 5 min using preheated water, try grinding coarser. It's taking 5 minutes (actually I timed it and it is 6.5 minutes.) It's just slow. It starts brewing quickly (15-20 seconds) but the water just dribbles out in spurts. The first cup I made was actually the second cup as I ran a cup of water w/o coffee the first time. For my second batch through the brewer I dropped it down to 10 grams. The coffee came out much better this time. The grounds still overflowed the filter basket getting some grounds into the cup. It actually tasted like Kona this time. It was not bitter 'til the end of the cup, probably due to the grounds that escaped the filter basket. It is still a very dark cup of coffee, so perhaps I can drop the dose a little more. -Peter On Apr 27, 2008, at 8:38 AM, stereoplegic wrote: <Snip> Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.homeroasting.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://lists.sweetmariascoffee.com/listinfo.cgi/homeroast-sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures 9upload yours!) :http://www.homeroasting.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20 |
Round 3: This time I tried 9 grams of coffee. The last batch was the last of my KPM, so this time I used IMV. My normal filter drip grind. First off, this made a respectable cup of coffee. The grounds still overflowed the filter basket so there were still grounds in the bottom of cup, but there was no bitter flavor, so I guess the last two batches where I attributed the bitter to the grounds was wrong. The other too must have just been too much coffee. This cup had great body and the flavor emphasized the deeper notes of the IMV, but the higher ones were there too. I'm still using paper filters in my normal drip pot, so it tends to mute the deeper notes and highlight the high ones. As of this cup I'm pretty impressed with this little coffee maker. It actually made a good cup of coffee and it's very economical with the coffee only 9 grams for a 8 oz cup of coffee. I'm going to try one with 8 grams to see if I can keep the coffee in the filter. Could be that home-roasted coffee just blooms too much for it. An AP with an immersion heater to heat the water would produce a better cup, but this is more compact, totally self-contained and more economical with the coffee. -Peter On Apr 27, 2008, at 10:37 AM, Coffee wrote: <Snip> Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.homeroasting.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://lists.sweetmariascoffee.com/listinfo.cgi/homeroast-sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures 9upload yours!) :http://www.homeroasting.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20 |
Round 4: This time I tried 8 grams of coffee to try to get rid of the grounds in the cup and to see how efficient this thing made coffee. Well, I still had grounds and the coffee was too thin, 9 grams was better. Since it looks like I'm not going to be able to get rid of the grounds in the cup, I'll stick with 9 or 10 grams. It was still a better cup than you would ever get in one of those in-hotel-room coffee makers. When you spend several hundred dollars per night for a hotel room, you'd think you could get good coffee rather than some generic thing labeled "Colombian". Seriously, it would be better if they didn't even offer it. The AP definitely makes a better cup of coffee. But it is bulkier and you have to come up with a way to heat the water, like an immersion heater. The Zelco makes a good cup of coffee and is self contained and compact. But it's slower and is a messier cleanup. I guess plan C could be bring the appropriately sized filter and use you own coffee in the in-room coffee maker... -Peter On Apr 27, 2008, at 5:28 PM, Coffee wrote: <Snip> Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.homeroasting.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://lists.sweetmariascoffee.com/listinfo.cgi/homeroast-sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures 9upload yours!) :http://www.homeroasting.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20 |
<Snip> It took years for the hotel industry to finally listen to all the travellers who said they wanted a cup of coffee firstthing in the morning. When they finally started listening, they went the cheapest way possible. Hotel room coffee is either those awful pod things or, just as bad, Folger's instant (which is what I have in my room right now). Three weeks ago I was in a very nice Marriott Hotel in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. I came prepared, I thought. I pre-ground enough Harrar Horse to last me for the few days I was going to be there. Only to find that the hotel had no in-room water heater and would not provide one (they claimed fire restrictions). By the time I got home my wonderful Harrar couldonly be thrown out. I'm in Dubai now and at least the Holiday Inn has a water heater. I have a small steel press pot and can at least make decent coffee in the morning. I've tried the AeroPress but can't seem to get the hang of it. Even the coffee providedby the caterer for the classes I teach makes coffee using Folger's instant. Bleeech. The night manager was a little intrigued, so I pressed him a cup of Brazil Daterra Yellow Bourbon. He ended up on SM's website at the front desk :) Come morning, I again made us some coffee (not decaf this time - Brazillian for me, and Harrar Horse for my bandmates). I was actually a little earlier to the lobby for breakfast than they were, so ended up sharing a table with a nice little old lady who apparently grew up on a coffee plantation in Puerto Rico! I wish she would have stayed longer to chat, but she had to get going to the festival. Anyway, she was telling me about the coffee they made there - Yaucono. She was quite adamant about the quality, and it may have been at one time, but it appears that they're now a huge roaster. Any quality left? Anyone know? Then again, the description of the Yauco Selecto that Tom had last doesn't really seem to fit the flavor profile I head for. Still, it was an interesting chat. Peter suggested: "I guess plan C could be bring the appropriately sized filter and use you own coffee in the in-room coffee maker..." Now that I'm a new AP owner, I wondered about using the in room coffee maker to heat the water, and then the AP to make the coffee? However, there have been many times when even after running several pots of just water through those things, the water smelled so bad that I just gave up. I know that good water is essential to good coffee, and have thought about asking the hotel kitchen if I could get some vinegar to do a quick coffee maker cleaning - or if there is another easy way to do a quick cleaning? For 90% of my trips, I use carry on luggage, which means I have that 3 oz, 1 qt. baggie limitation - so I really don't have room for extra coffee cleaners. Now that I'm hooked on the wonderful home roasting/grinding/brewing coffee experience, there just has to be a way to get better coffee on the road.... Or so I hope. Actually I think should be plan A or B. ;-) I'm still deciding between the AP and the Zelco. The cups of coffee that the two make are different. The AP makes a clean cup that I believe misses out on the deeper flavors and richness. The Zelco makes a cup that has all that in there... Frank brought up a small french press (which I have, but I haven't thought of traveling with it). It would make a cup of coffee better than either the Zelco or the AP... But I would hate to break it. Bodum makes a small press that comes with a mug... Has anyone tried this? I guess there are other options I've seen a couple of 1-cup pour overs too. Once you add in the idea of an immersion heater, other possibilities open up. I wonder what the TSA would think of that in your luggage? -Peter On May 4, 2008, at 4:13 AM, Vicki Smith wrote: <Snip> Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.homeroasting.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://lists.sweetmariascoffee.com/listinfo.cgi/homeroast-sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures 9upload yours!) :http://www.homeroasting.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20 |

Alright, returning the thread to a couple of thoughts about travel. Apparently we are a bunch of travelers, this question came up about 3 months ago at my instigation... and my travel coffee improved so damn much!!! Thanks again to the list! So my 2 cents. I travel almost exclusively by truck. I have a coffee bag that sits by my door. I have my coffee, an AP (with accesories), a Bodum C-Mill (whirly blade), and a Bodum mini Ibis (water boiler). I would travel with an immersion heater if needed and pre-grind if needed. Frank and Peter, keep trying. I think the AP gives a fine cup of coffee when you get the variables right. I read the entire coffee geek thread (wow!) the other week, which cleared some things up. You don't want to use 175 degree water. The inventor was using that with very dark roasted beans. Everyone on the thread who homeroasts (and uses lighter roasts) uses a much higher temp. I always use just-off boil (but I'm at elevation, which makes it just under 200 F). 175 reduces the brightness and under-extracts. you still want to use hot water. Grind very fine. I probably grind for 20 seconds. That powderizes it pretty well, but the paper filter can handle it. Again, the AP directions use too much coffee. If I am going for a regular-strength cup with no added water, I use 1 scoop. Generally, I use 2 scoops and then add water. I invert, even with the paper filters. Why? 1. longer stir time with less seep-through. 2. more oils come through paper filter after inversion. I stir for about 30 seconds. The CG thread seemed to indicate that the most critical step in the process was stirring. steeping and pressing were distant seconds compared to stirring. Stir with the scoop, leave the stirrer at home. this also helps with bloom. I press the bloom through the cap, then revert and press. I press very gently (again, counter-intuitively, but picked up from CG...) The coffee is inferior to a French Press, but still great for an on-the-road cup. Scott Marquadt has a polyester felt filter that everyone swears by. I haven't used one yet. I think that the AP can compare to a pretty good cup in most circumstances, but shines on the road for ease and cleanliness. Seriously, if you're traveling light, it doesn't get lighter than the AP, ground coffee, and an immersion heater. Keep fiddling with those variables, and I think you'll find the AP a nice way to travel. bill in wyo Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.homeroasting.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://lists.sweetmariascoffee.com/listinfo.cgi/homeroast-sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures 9upload yours!) :http://www.homeroasting.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20 |
