Topic: Missing my coffee (13 msgs / 233 lines)
1) From: F.R. Parth
So I've been on the road for the last ten days or so and have another 10 days to go. I roasted and pre-ground (yes, I know that's not ideal, but there are limits to how much I can pack) some of my favorite Harrar Horse. I have a small stainless steel press pot that I packed and I've been using that in the hotel.
Yesterday I ran out. Bummer. But while I was shopping for a new suitcase to replace one the airlines broke I found a Gloria Jean's in the shopping mall. Bought myself 250 grams of something labeled as a Kenya and had them pre-grind it for me. While they were grinding I looked at the bag of beans. It proudly said the beans were roasted in Australia in December and were good up until October. Since my beans start to go downhill after a couple of weeks it's wonderful that their beans will stay fresh and good for 10 months.
Tried it this morning. There's absolutely no flavor to it. It could be the cheapest robusta bean and it would taste the same. Bleech. But at that it's still better than the Nescafe instant packets the hotel offers. Even their restaurant uses instant to make their pots. I am sooooo looking forward to getting back home and having some real coffee. One of life's little pleasures that I don't really miss until it's gone.

If you are on the road a lot, you might find it helpful to pre-plan your
trip, seeing if there's any good roasters on your path. How much did you
take? Couldn't you throw another bag of pre-ground in? I don't like that
thought, and am grateful for the grinder I can take...
Anyway, what I'm really trying to say is that I feel for you Frank. Good
luck and may there be good coffee in your path.

Eeeuw. Think I'll start bringing my coffee backpack (hand grinder,
beans, AP or pourover) out of the car into on-the-road hash-house
restaurants with me and ask for hot water (and order tea--with the bag
on the side, of course--so I don't look like a cheapskate, like those
folks who ask for a saucer full of lemon wedges and then pull out
their own sweetener to turn the free tapwater into
lemonade......tacky, tacky).

Bill,
I try and pre-plan as much as possible. But I left Los Angeles on April 30th and flew to Dubai. I'm here until
nextThursday, when I fly to Malta to give a presentation at a convention. I'm home for only 10 days and then it's off
to KualaLumpur for a week to teach management classes.
Compared to the coffee we have available in the US, the parts of the world I travel in drink sludge. I do what I can.
Since I had to replace a suitcase I bought a larger one and now maybe I have enough room to take my small Zass grinder.

When I've had to travel light I vac sealed my ground homeroast with pretty
good results. It's better than anything I'll get in a hotel. I'm going on
an hiking/camping trip next weekend to a place called Linville Gorge in
North Carolina and taking a Zass and Aeropress. I'm trying to travel very
light since I'll be carrying it on my back.

Frank:
good morning,
I know exactly how you feel. I forgot my travel kit this trip to the mountains!!
If you are in a hotel/motel that has in room coffee, use one package (the typical 4 cupper)
and make one and 1/2 cups. Not bad!!
ginny
at minimum it has some taste!!!
carry on dude!!

Forget about KL even the best restaurants only serve Nescafe.
Neighborhood restaurants only give you hot water a jar of Nescafe is
on the table and you spoon it into the hot water yourself.

Going without has become one of my biggest fears. Yesterday I was
deployed to assist with post tornado recovery efforts in a near by
county (I am with public safety). Thought process. Uniform, sleeping
bag.... no AP, 200g pre ground Sumatra, ok now the sleeping bag.
Last night in a quite movement I went to the salvation army mobile
food wagon, climbed in the back with AP in hand and asked for hot
water. They laughed, said sure. When they smelled they results several
commented on how poor their coffee from the big red plastic bucket
is. I smiled, said thanks and enjoy a somewhat under extracted (water
temp maybe 150), cup of coffee.
Frank, I had it tough for one day.... if you are in the area yell I
will deploy some fresh ground to you.

At least in Israel if you ask for "cafe filter" they give you a little
cup-top pourover drip preloaded with ground coffee (and if it's
anything like those old Folger's Singles coffee bags, a little bit of
instant for color). Still better than straight Nescafe.

Alex,
Thanks for the offer. I can appreciate what you're going through. I spent a number of years with Orange County Search
and Rescue in California. Earthquake country. I spent two weeks living in a tent at Cal State Northridge after the 1994
earthquake helping to clean up. The Red Cross showed up three days later and passed out leaflets giving directions to
their place.
Paid my dues, thank you.

OK, you are with public safety & you do post tornado recovery - and one of
your biggest fears is going without good coffee?
That deserves at least 10,000 CSA points, I'd say!! (both for your work, and
your dedication to homeroast)
