I've come to consider fresh roasted as "normal"
Anything else is just substandard.
A century or so ago wasn't home roasting the norm?
Like the price of gold, the quality of home roasted hasn't changed,
just the perception of value to many unenlightened.

I'm drinking the last couple of cups of SM's French Roast Blend that I
roasted for my parent's visit a month ago. They went through nearly 2 pounds
of SM's French Roast while they were here. My mother stuck with the French
Roast, but my Father tried several others and liked them all. I can tell the
French Roast is a little stale -- it's been sitting in the back of the
cupboard for a month.
One thing that home roasting coffee has taught me is the flavor/smell of
stale coffee. I can pick it out smelling the beans! I can even pick it out
in my month old French Roast. It's not too strong in this case, but it is a
little off putting. It makes it hard to drink normal coffee.

Yeah. I actually lower my standards when judging coffee shop coffee.
I'll get excited over stuff that I would be disappointed by if I had
roasted it myself.

Maybe, but on the other hand the quality of the beans would not have
been as good as what we're getting.

Again, don't underestimate the fact that the beans from SM are of
exceptional quality.

I agree whole-heartedly! Even with other coffees that are roasted by me, I
am still not very impressed. Sweet Marias, on the other hand... man that's
good coffee!bill in wyo
