How much does a cool ambient temp affect this roaster, as compared to the HW
Precision?

I cannot compare the two because I do not have a HWP, but ambient
temperature does have a significant effect on the original Alp. However,
the new version shipping now is supposed to have different firmware that
compensates for ambient temperature. Swissmar is replacing my old Alp that
has become flakey with the new version so I will have one to try late next
week and I will post here.

Benson,
My Alp is one of the hotter calibrated (original design). I've roasted
outdoors at 54F and wasn't able to achieve 2nd crack and barely a city
roast. I've found with my unit, that I need at least 64F to have successful
roasts to 2nd crack level with the Alp. Of course, you can probably roast
inside a box and things like that to roast at cooler ambient temps.
