Can anyone recommend a good half caf blend to try? I currently have some decaf Sumatra and Guatemalan from last year. When my wife and I are in the mood for a half caf, we typically use a mix of Monkey and Donkey, which is convenient since we keep both on hand. We've made it as shots and in the moka pot with great success. I'm sure other brewing methods would do just as well. This may not be the most fashionable mix, but I've been really happy with a 50% Decaf Sumatra, 50% Reg Columbia, both roasted dark (FC+ to Vienna), with the Columbia roasted just a little lighter. The Huila Valencia on SM's list works great. Or you can use the Decaf Sumatra with a Yemen or an Ethiopian to make a 50/50 Moka Java blend. Check out SM's "Blending Basics" article on the web site for ideas. <Snip> Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.homeroasting.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://lists.sweetmariascoffee.com/listinfo.cgi/homeroast-sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures 9upload yours!) :http://www.homeroasting.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20 |
I'm drinking a mixture of Kenya AA Auction Lot 220 Katatrina, Ethiopian Sidamo Decaf, and Guatamala Royal Decaf. Roughly 1/3 each, but the Guat was a bit less than 1/3. Good, rich chocolately taste, a bit bright (most likely due to the Kenya), but very good. I roasted these on 4/30 I nailed these roasts. Lately, it seems to be hit or miss with me. Been trying very hard to make sure I don't screw up - had a couple of roasts that were *awful*. Started to think I lost my talent - since this is the bottom of my green stash barrel (thank God for all you kind hearted souls here in my homeroast family, who got me through a real tough period - never had to give up homeroast - or, gasp, turn to grocery store swill!!), I thought that maybe the beans were too old. However, when I realized that when I roasted, (I do several different kinds each time I roast) ALL were either crappy, or great... so the fault was with the operator, not the beans. :D Lynne (woo-hoo to great roasts!!)
