So, I finally got up the courage to roast this bean on May 1st. I kept is as light as I could, just out of 1st crack, in the iRoast. I only roasted 1/2 cup (I measure by volume). This also allowed me to increase the airflow a bit and slow the roasting as much as I could. Yesterday I tried my first cup. I figured I'd experience the full funk of the bean at 4 days, maybe a little more muted at 5. Smelling the beans, it's definitely an odd one. As the 1.5 AP scoops of beans were ground, the aroma hit like a brick - even standing away from the grinder - and I found myself thinking "what did I get myself into...". Loaded the Aeropress, poured the water, probably around 190-200 degrees, stir for 10 seconds, rinse the paddle, then plunge. Topped off with a little bit of water. Wow. What an interesting coffee. I just don't really have the words for it. It's definitely earthy, funky, bizzarre. I typically shun the whole idea of flavored coffees, but for some reason, the thought flashes across my brain that the perfect flavoring for this coffee would be natural Durian flavor (the artificial durian flavors are truly awful). A few more sips, and I find myself actually enjoying this weird cup. I brought it in to the office today, knowing that my office mate enjoys weird foods. He was not disappointed. He likes it. He says "it starts bitter and ends sweet. I like it. It's slightly earthy. I offered a smell to my less discerning coworker from down the hall. His comment: "it smells like animal" Definitely not an everyday cup, but definitely enjoyable. - allon Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.homeroasting.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://lists.sweetmariascoffee.com/listinfo.cgi/homeroast-sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures 9upload yours!) :http://www.homeroasting.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20 |
