No jumping up and down with Joy and drooling? Is the List down or did nobody
notice Tom won TWELVE (8 of Lot 10, 4 of Lot 5) of the 300LB Lot batches in
today's ~9hr marathon Esmeralda auction?

Nice respectable price for some hard quality work.
Enjoy it - some days, it is nice being wired just a little
different. I have had opportunity to try Gesha twice, and neither
time turned me into a fan. Not sure why, especially after reading
Tom's reviews, but it just doesn't do it for me.
Again, enjoy it, and pass my 'share' around.

i don't know that these guys made any more money than they normally
would have. Used to be if you wanted the non auction lot coffee, you
were paying $14 a lb or more, green, and of course that reflects
shipping from Panama. I think you're going to see the coffee for a
little less, green, though I imagine the roasters will sell it for a
premium (like George Howell and Peets, and oh yeah, Stumptown who
seemed to snap up every high priced lot).
Personally, I'm waiting for this year's Roastmaster's choice: Panama
Hacienda La Esmeralda Gesha! ;)

Sure. The fair trade orgs want to emboss a set price on everything.
I can't remember what the specific price is for coffee, but the last
number I saw was not even 10% of this auction ($1.30ish). The reason
I called fair trade commie nonsense was because it completely ignores
the specifics of the producer, his product and the consumer with a
boilerplate price.
Coffee has a range of quality/price with the two ends being very
distinct. There's the c-rate comondity product that is focused on
price, and that being WAY below fair trade. Fair trade doesn't mean
diddly to the people buying cans of Folgers or 8 O'Clock. The other
end is the specialty product focused on taste like this Gesha. What
this auction proves is that farmers can produce coffee that is "worth"
a high price and at the same there are consumers willing to pay.
What would get farmers better prices is to reduce the number of people
and interference between them and the roaster, not more. Who needs
Fair Trade in a world where the people producing low and high quality
coffee get paid in kind?

I see that some companies paid around a hundred bucks a pound. Since i am
not familiar with this coffee...i cant imagine.
How good is this stuff?
I have about thirty pounds of greens...and at about a pound a week (me as a
lone coffee drinker, 1/2 lb roasting every 3-4 days)...thats about seven
months worth of coffee. On my last order, my wife was a little
upset...asking me why I should get more when I already have more than I can
use. Should I make sure to get this stuff?
I am gonna cc her on this one...so reply all and let her know why i need
more (ha ha).

Our problem is that it's an adventure that sometimes ruined the
coffee ... and that guy David was absolutely, insanely unreliable. I
remember the time he shipped us 2 bags of "triage coffee", meaning
broken little bits, and just the shipping for the useless garbage was
$1500! And he was sending people who ordered individually some very
old past crop coffee. when it's "on", it's great. just a frustrating
person to try to rely upon though. IMHO Ish never fills an entire
room with aromatics though- it's a much more restrained coffee than a
good gesha. Tom

not a boilerplate price. The lowest price is enough to be sustainable for

I think all this talk of fair trade in the context of the Panama
Esmerelda Coffee Farm that just auctioned off a little over 30,000
pounds of coffee for an average price of $15 a pound and is owned by the
family of a former Bank of America president is a little silly.
It's not like this place is owned by a cooperative of campesino's
scratching a living from the hills.

Tom,
That is why I have not bought any Isle of St. Helena in 4 years. Besides
you have so many awesome offereings, it really isn't missed much! I am a
Gesha fan! That said, there are some sleepers on the list that should be
demanding 15-20 dollars a pound if price was based on flavor. I was
discussing two of those sleepers on the phone this morning with a fellow
list member. No, I am not going to reveal them so they disappear too
fast!
A blend of Liberica at 10% with a good 40% High Central Bourbon and a Dry
Processed Brazil is one of the most stunning coffees that I have had in a
long time! I have had two people take me up on the Liberica offer and I
think they will be amazed when they taste it. I just got back from Alabama
and I dropped the Liberica of our hosts without any explaination of what
they were getting into. Jim likes good coffee. He thought it was one of
the best cups of coffee he had ever had. Like I say, with the right roast
profile the "Barnyard" isn't there!
