Maiden roasts on her new stage/platform. 2hrs 40min into the roast session
batch 9 cruisin' along. Current batch Aged Sumatra, a 10% Ohaha element.
Batch roasting along more or less ignored at the moment, profiles dialed in
and running automated for the most part.) This puppy is a joy to roast on.
And the USRC 3k is like the energizer bunny, just keeps going and going and
going:-)
The pits is still have Tillmook Sharp Cheddar, Gosner Swiss, and Oven Roast
Beef to slice and bag before going home, can put off the Hickory Smoked Pit
Ham 'til tomorrow.
1st ended while typing coming up on 2nd, time to weigh out the MM for the
next batch so it'll be ready to charge after the Aged Sum' dumps.
Damn, Aged Sum' auto-profile off. Auto-dumped at 15:56 easing into 'bout
20sec building 2nd instead of 16:00:-)
Gotta go!

Mike,
I just did my first "differential" roast in my USRC. I am going to be
pulling shots all summer for our church breakfast and I came up with the
"New Hope" blend. However, I wanted the Blue Batak and the Panama Robusta
to be roasted a little darker than the Brazil Poco Fundo and the Guatamala
Aqua Tibia that make up the rest of the blend. So, I began the roast with
115 grams of Blue Batak and 45 grams of Panama Robusta. After 90 seconds I
introduced the 115 grams of Aqua Tibia and the 225 grams of Poco Fundo.
Sure enough first crack began about 10 degrees cooler than "normal" due to
the early beans and those early beans were about 30 seconds into second
crack when I reached a full city temp for the majority of the mass. Post
inspection of the roast, it looks awesome! Hit my target time of 17 minutes
dead on for both roasts. I'll give a report on Monday as to how it tastes.
I was hoping to get my beans earlier in the week, darn Holiday slowed
shipping down. You got to love these roasters! I thought it would be fun
to play around with not have to post roast blend, but still get a different
level or roast. I was excited that my second roast profiled the same as the
first.

Indeed dumped the "ruined" Aged Sumatra batch, took 17 roasts to hit exactly
16:00! (=kidding alert as opposed to irony alert:-)
So glad made the decision when ordering the USRC 3k to cough up the
additional ~$3k for the PLC control system. As planned enables much more
effective time use and multi-tasking while roasting. And in the future will
enable easily training someone else to roast exactly the way I want coffees
roasted freeing my time for other business building activities. Or heck, not
just working 12 to 16hr days!
But in reality while yesterday was about a 16hr grind, it was a good
satisfying day. And the time and satisfaction of the roast session a big
part of making it so. Amidst the hectic whirlwind of running every facet of
the Roastery Kafe from monitoring foodstuffs stocking levels and constant
buying forays, interviewing and training new employees, dealing with
vendors, dealing with finding a new main bakery after 2 day notification my
bakery was closing their doors, keeping current employees on task and off
their cell/text phones etc. when things need doing, dealing with government
bureaucracies like getting notified my Employment Security Rates went up
1200% this entire year because of an unemployment claim in 2004 previous
owner (fighting that and loosing so far) etc. etc. etc. The soothing swish
swish swish of the drum, the gradual changing colors of the bean through the
viewer, eyeing and wafting samples with tryer and the gorgeous rewards
stirring in the tray calm the frayed nerves.
But I forgot to bring in Mt. Thunder Kona XF to roast last night! (Don't
store greens at the Roastery Kafe, not good environment and don't have space
for a large greens freezer there.) So running a couple 279gr batches in the
CCR HT as I type before heading out the door. (To yield a LB for two 1/4ers
and one 1/2 for shelf;-)

Cool technique. Would also be useful for SO mélange roasts of course.
PS: Commercial style roasters spoil ya. HATE having to wait for batch to
cool before starting next batch with CCR HT! =
