I'm new to the HomeRoast Digest. I've been roasting for approx. 4 years now. I have a Freshroast, IRoast 1, IRoast 2 and now a Gene. I envy those who can hear 1st and 2nd crack, unaided, in the Gene. Maybe someday for me. Mike Gervais writes :

Mike, here's what I've done. I have the oversized chaff collector with vent tubing routed to the outside. In the vent tubing near the chaff collector outlet I've installed a stethescope. I bought a cheap metal stethescope off ebay and removed the plastic diaphrams, which obviously wouldn't stand up to 400 degree plus heat. Since the heat conduction through the stethescope will also damage the stethescope tubing, I provided a buffer by doing the following. I removed the stethescope tubing, replacing it with about a 2 inch length of 1/4 inch fuel line. The guy at the auto store told me that tubing was good for about 200 degrees but so far it's working fine. If I have to replace a 2inch length of 1/4 inch fuel line once in a while, that's o.k..Then I inserted about a 2inch length of copper tubing into that, but didn't push it in far enough to touch the body of the stethescope so I wouldn't conduct heat through it. Over the copper tubing I reinstalled the original stethes
cope tubing and earpiece. So, it's stethescope body, fuel line, copper tubing, stethescope tubing. It works. No heat to the stethescope tubing and I can hear 1st and 2nd crack. If you, or anyone else is interested in seeing what this looks like, just email me, I'll send a picture.
