Vicki, John, Cameron and others,
When ordering from SM what have you found to be the best method of shipping?
I have used flat rate with no problems but it limits what I can order. I am
using UPS for my latest order and the tracker says a hold has been requested
and payment must be made prior to release.
All the best.

I always, always always use USPS. I sometimes play with the amount, as
there seem to be "sweet spots" in terms of mailing cost per pound. I
stopped ordering UPS for anything shipped from the states long before I
joined SM because UPS can have $20 extra fee added on, depending on some
complexity relating to exactly what UPS service is being used.

Hi John,
Funny you should bring this up as I'm having the same issue with an
order I placed yesterday for shipment by UPS. My previous shipment
was also held until I paid UPS for the taxes (GST) that they said were
owing on the shipment. Eventually, I managed to get UPS to refund the
tax as it should not be paid on green beans since they are an
agricultural product and not taxed under NAFTA. Similarly, you should
not have to pay any tax on commercial items made in the US or Mexico.
UPS is a little more expensive, but the difference in shipping time is
two days vs two weeks. I have an additional problem with getting
shipments from the postal service as they make me pick the box up at
the post office rather than leaving it at my door (which UPS will do).

Thanks Cameron,
Did UPS contact you before they released your order or did they deliver it
to your door and then ask for payment? Who did you deal with to rectify the
GST issue?
Thanks again.
John H.

6) From: Cameron Forde
Hi John,
I received a delivery notice indicating payment was required before
delivery. I simply left a cheque on the porch for the delivery
person. Then I contacted their customer service about getting the
amount refunded. The whole process took more than a month. You may
have to request that they send you a cheque as their default mechanism
is to credit your account (even if you don't have an account).
I placed an order on Monday and got the shipping notification from
UPS. Following the link to track the package I noticed that there is
a hold on this package, just like last time. So I have already sent a
message to their customer service to see if we can avoid the whole
issue.

If you can find out the proper code numbers that cover the duty or
lack there of on the importation of coffee beans the problem might
resolve itself. I import a lot of stuff from NZ and if the code is
missing the customs guys guess and they don't care how much you pay.
You can get more info by searching for "harmonized customs codes".

Have you guys considered either FedEx or DHL? I ship between the US and
Shanghai. They are both 10 times better than UPS. If I want something to
arrive screwed up or broken, only then do I use UPS.

delivery in 2 days.

Did you not have to pay any brokerage fees? How many pounds did you order?
I know that UPS changed their policies, and some services include brokerage
fees, while others do not.
Thanks,

Hi Derek,
No Brokerage fee. But when I called to discuss the GST charge, UPS said that
any brokerage I go with must charge the GST. They said they don't know how
but USPS doesn't charge GST on shipments. UPS was very pleasant but there is
no way to get the GST back so I will use USPS from now on unless I'm in a
hurry for the shipment.
I ordered 16 lbs.

Thanks for the explanation, John. UPS is frustrating for sure. I love that
they "don't know how USPS does it." As if.

Coffee, green or roasted, is taxed at 0% in Canada, and you "can" get GST back if it was collected by mistake-but it's such a hassle that I've just let it go when it's happened to me.. I'm lucky to live close enough to the US border that I can keep a US post office box and have coffee sent there, then import it myself, tax free. Customs brokers often (usually!) screw up and pay the tax, then charge you that plus their fee.

I use UPS only when USPS not accepted by vendor, and don't feel delayed or ill-served. I think USPS is inferior only in certain circumstances. IMHO, dyssing USPS is largely an aspect of the current hate-the-government campaign that the so-called right wing in our politics has succeeded in spreading as an antidote to populist policies.

Clearly complaining about poor service from any shipper is a sign of the
existence of The Vast Right Wing Conspiracy. Could not possibly be
based on the existence of hard physical evidence of sub standard
performance of the shipper.
And, FYI the USPS is NOT a government agency. It was privatized years
ago because the federal government could not successfully operate it.
Look it up.

As a Canadian that lived in Seattle for 7 years (1999-2006) I must say that
in comparison to our postal system in Canada. USPS is heads and tails
better. I would take USPS over Canada Post anyday.
Not to mention they were the sponsors of the best cycling team as well.

Some of us have had really bad experiences. Did you know that if you
live in a complex with more than 8 units they are not required to
look for your door and can just leave a note in the box saying pick
your package up at the post Office tomorrow? Even if it's Express
mail? From my prospective as a shipper, UPS is just so much better
it's not even funny.

We all have to realize just how huge the U.S. is - it never hit home until I
moved to Arizona (we drove there - and back, when we moved back home to
Massachusetts). I did a map comparison - from Boston to San Diego is the
same distance as Dublin to somewhere in the middle of Russia.
With that amount of territory, there is no way service with USPS is going to
be the exact same in every corner, rural, city, whatever - in the U.S.
I think what it comes down to - is the delivery person. Even with my mail..
we have a new mailman (haven't had a female mail person - whatever to call
her!! - since I moved out of this apt. for my miserable 5 months, and she
was *great*.), and he, either puts all the mail in my mailbox or on the
table below the mailboxes. Alas, at least he doesn't drop all the mail on
the porch instead of stepping inside the door to the apts (there are two -
count 'em - two apartments in this house-turned-into-apartments) - got sick
of *that*. I tacked on a HUGE, visable sign on mine with JUST our names
(sick of getting other people's mail), to no avail.
Believe me, if they DARED to drop any of my coffee packages on the porch, I
would have been FURIOUS. Frankly, though, I think it was just the luck of
the draw (and no saying what'll happen in the future).
