Topic: Kopi Luwak Coffee as Metaphor for Emptiness in (4 msgs / 94 lines)
1) From: sci
I just saw Bucket List.
Warning: SOME PLOT SPOILERS HERE.
Hilarious. Of course I recommend it to this list.
Coffee as a metaphor two men's lives:
A persistent metaphor in Bucket List is coffee. At the end of the journey
the two men wind up in coffee cans at the top of a mountain. The two
characters represent two different perspectives on life, with its myriad of
issues, and death, with its numerous complications. Carter, the blue collar
mechanic, lives a traditional life, has faith, marriage to one woman,
family, hard work. Cole, a hard-nosed billionaire businessman, lives a
turbulent life with multiple marriages, cynicism, playboy life, and
dysfunctional relationships. Both drink coffee. Carter drinks
"Chock-full-of-Nuts." Cole drinks Kopi Luwak from a sophisticated gold
vacuum pot. The two coffees represent the two men's lives. Chock Full of
Nuts is cheap; Kopi Luwak cost gold. As the two men race around the world
accomplishing experiences on their "Bucket List," one thing becomes
apparent, especially toward the end. Carter has a meaningful, if mundane,
life; Cole has an empty, if glamorous, life. Just like their coffees. Carter
goes back to his family after the world tour and has a warm family and wife
in a middle class home. Cole goes back to a cold empty mansion with call
girls, tears of remorse, and an empty bag of Kopi.
Right before Carter dies, he shows Cole an article on Kopi Luwak: Cole has
been drinking CAT CRAP, just like his crappy life. They both get a big long
laugh out of the fact that it is cat crap, but the poignancy cuts to the
heart of the matter. Cole changes and starts to accept some his lost
friend's values.
Carter wanted his ashes put in a Chock Full of Nuts coffee can and placed
somewhere there was a nice view. Eventually, Cole opts for the same way to
conclude his life.
Watch Bucket List and follow the coffee references and see how coffee
represents life.
FWIW,
Ivan
