We've been deluged by rain for weeks now. Areas of Cedar Rapids, where
Brett Mason and I both live, are under emergency evacuation -- downtown,
neighborhoods along the Cedar River, and entire nearby towns. Brett's and
my houses are on higher ground and are still safe, and we still have power
to run our sump pumps. Many others in our city aren't so lucky.
All but two bridges crossing the river that runs through the middle of Cedar
Rapids have been closed. A railroad bridge collapsed this morning. They're
evacuating the 500 year flood plain. The river is expected to rise until
Friday or Saturday, coming close or surpassing the 500 year flood levels.
The city water supply has lost power to one of the plants and several wells,
reducing the supply to about 25% of normal; repairs won't be possible until
the water subsides. Interstate traffic has been reduced to one lane to
allow emergency vehicles to move around the city. A 15-20 minute drive
across town now takes over 2 hours.
The closeup picture of a downtown bridge shown near the end of this video
shows a foot or more of water over the roadbed. The river is normally some
15 to 20 feet below the bridge.http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZtNqBUgXuEEPray for the thousands of people who are being displaced from their homes in
Cedar Rapids, Iowa this week. And Iowa isn't the only state affected by
this week's floods. So many have lost all they own.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear this! I haven't watched the news in ages (too
depressing for
me), so I was totally unaware that this was happening.
I'll be praying for you, Brett, and everyone else. Thank you so much for
sharing this
with us (and thank God you have the electricity to do connect!)

In Denver, they'd break out the Civil Defense generators and run the
irrigation water pumps in the event, just like classic old buildings have
been scraped for parking lots. We are adequately served by parking lots-
I-70, I-25, I-270, I-225, et al. at rush hour. -ro

Yeah. I used to live in Denver. Loved it. This flooding is far worse than
I remember in Colorado.
Flooding keeps getting worse than expected. The Cedar River here in Cedar
Rapids floods at 12 feet. It's currently at 29 feet and is expected to
crest at about 31 feet, exceeding the 500 year (probability) flood plain.
To add to the misery, we received another 4 to 5 inches of rain over the
past 24 hours. Three out of four of the city's wells are without power.
We're under a water conservation order -- drinking water only...no other
uses.

Prayers sent, Dave and Brett. Not two months ago I enjoyed a lovely
evening playing in Davenport and enjoying dinner with our own Jeff
Cozad; last year we played a barn concert outside Independence and a
radio show and church service in Cedar Falls; breaks my heart to see
what is happening there now. Also praying that all our IA friends are
spared any more tornadoes such as the horrible one that struck
yesterday on the state's SW border n. of Omaha.

Greetings from Iowa,
Not too bad here... The flooding on the Mississippi River is pretty much as
it was when you played the gig in April. They are forecasting it to go maybe
to 20', which is half a foot higher than it was then. That is way short of
the high in 1993 of 22'.
The bike ride into work this morning was "interesting" given that we had 3"
of rain in about 3 hours over night. I had a few routing changes due to
flooded streets from the rain fall. Here's a little point-able web cam that
you can see the river in downtown Davenport.http://webcam46.ci.davenport.ia.us/top/liveapplet.htmlIf you point the cam all the way to the left, you can see the bridge that I
cross the river on.
Obligatory Coffee Content - I had two most excellent double ristrettos of
the Classic Italian Blend this morning. I'm really liking this coffee.
