Topic: Brett - is good to go. (7 msgs / 209 lines)
1) From: Sean Cary
Hi Sean,
We are doing well. We live on higher ground, up about 100' higher and 4
miles away from the river.
Our family has been concentrating on helping with sandbags, clearing
basements, and just helping out. Today I was back at the office (also on
high ground)...
I just posted a flood map on my blog, zoomable. Seems Iowa is really the
only place primarily affected!
http://www.xanga.com/rockinjava9Cedar Rapids has about 5,000 displaced of the 125,000 who live here. About
400 blocks are flooded downtown. That means businesses shut down, people
out of work, and property at risk. 2 Weeks from now we'll have our city
back, but very dirty. Most businesses will try to recover, maybe in 1-3
months. Some won't be able to sustain the losses and will fold.
It's a very trying time for the city. We are fortunate that Iowans do a lot
for their community - I don't think anyone lost their life in this, mostly
it's displacement and property damage...
Pray for us. Thanks for the note!
Brett

Thanks for the update Brett. I had no idea. Glad you and your family aren't
directly affected. My blessings are out to your community.
All the best.

Brett,
Thanks for the link. My daughter and her husband just moved from Kansas City to Clinton, MO. From the map it looks
likethey're not hugely affected.

Brett isn't monitoring the list, but I am passing comments on to him.
Cedar Rapids will have months of recovery ahead, but at least the river has
crested -- 19.21 feet OVER flood stage and over 11 feet deeper than the
previous flood record set in 1929.
We have a tremendous community here in Cedar Rapids --city government very
organized for such an emergency, and lots of hard working and generous
volunteers. It's great to live in Iowa. The shelters are overflowing with
locally-provided clothes, toys, food, etc. And FEMA was in town this
morning, so we'll likely be declared a federal disaster area in the next day
or two.
The bad news now is 30 miles down river from us. Iowa City, home of the
University of Iowa Hawkeyes, is just now seeing their waters rise. The
river won't crest down there until Tuesday. There are several small towns
that will be completely devistated -- Palo and Columbus Junction, to name
two.
If you care to watch, the local ABC TV station is broadcasting status
wall-to-wall (no commercials) at www.kcrg.com
Thanks to all of you for your prayers and notes of concern.

This was from an e-mail that Brett sent me - he is not reading this list
much/or at all any longer.

What he said...
When I got home yesterday I e-mailed Brett to check in on him...and
forwarded the comments since there are folks on the list who know him.
Seems like a bunch of the regulars have moved on... I've been too busy with
work to really read much lately...only getting worse.

Was playing in Madison, WI last night. I-90/39 is closed n. of US 151
due to flooding. Hope nobody was planning a Wisconsin Dells
vacation. Saw video of Lake Delton--floods, mud, washed out roads,
homes destroyed.....
