Topic: Scheduling yourself and raises > PNWG VI thanks (5 msgs / 146 lines)

I don't know, if you're the owner it's easy to give yourself a raise. Now I
said "give yourself a raise", not actually be able to PAY yourself that
raise:-) (Or sometimes at all. Landlord, insurance, government agencies out
the wazoo, vendors, employs etc. always get paid...owners get the scraps if
there are any...) Many seem to think just because someone owns a business
their "in the money". Just yesterday my new employee made the comment in
ignorance "owners make a lot more than employees." I let her know that while
she's been on board for two bi-monthly Payrolls and paid on time both times
including yesterday, both those two Paydays I paid myself zip. An employee
simply trades their time for a guaranteed agreed wage. A good owner is in it
for the long haul "investing" both time and money for future possible
rewards with zero guarantee of ever making a dime and the real possibility
of loosing it all.
As far as scheduling goes as an owner you do what needs to be done when it
needs to be done whether you feel like it or not 24/7/365. Certainly didn't
feel like going in for 6 hours Sunday only to be back 6am Monday! (Some
"roast to orders" to roast plus slicing meats and cheeses for the week.)
During the PNWG VI "field trip" may have noticed Maria got a bit hammered so
found myself "working" not just hosting...
Don't get me wrong, not complaining. I'm the Captain of my ship and the
future will be what I make of it. mcKona Koffee Roastery & Paradise Kafe
will be a success both emotionally and financially or I'll die trying.

2) From: Tom & Maria - Sweet Maria's Coffee
I hear you, Mike. I didn't get paid for a year and a half. And I
spent 8 years doing a lot of the menial things (the lowest janitorial
things I didn't want to ask others to do) until I finally realized
that I absolutely must focus on my own tasks, and delegate. It's
quite a ride, and a thrill when it actually works. I saw sweet
maria's as an experiment. People essentially vote to keep you around
by placing orders, or they decide what we offered wasn't interesting
by not placing orders and then i would figure out something else (not
neccesarily quitting coffee, but maybe a different way). If you
remember, we had a "cafe" indeed, figuring hey, i need a place to
pack the orders and have a cup of coffee - why not let people in.
Plus we had the 12k diedrich and did some local roasting. it was
always about home roasting though, and in fact that whole end of the
business either A. failed or B. was consumed by home roasting. so i
had the opportunity to see a good idea fail, and at the same time
another succeed. Now, in your situation, how in the world you can
host PNWG and do the shop is amazing, or insane. The field trip
sounds like your tie-in. I still need to come up an see the place.

Welcome to the club!
I'm the last to get paid, and that's out of whatever is left and whatever I decide to keep in the business. I started
aconsulting company and it took along time to get enough clients to make a profit and pay my bills. I spent 18 months
as the Chief Tech Officer for a dot-com and didn't get paid until we sold the company. I have three batteries for my
Mac laptop so that I can keep working on overseas flights.
You can't go into working for yourself unless you really love what you do.
On the plus side, people pay me to fly all over the world and office advice and give seminars. It just takes awhile.
The biggest plus is that I don't ever have to have an annual review where someone else is telling me where I screwed
upeight months ago. I do that on a daily basis.
